Pennsylvania FFA’ers receiving gold emblems in the 1986 Livestock Holders Recognition Program were Sue Burkhart, Delvin Huber and Rick Hicks. Tom Morgan received a silver emblem. In the Dairy Holders Recognition Program Lamar Gorkley, Linda Buffington and Becky Sonnen received gold emblems. Kevin Stoltzfus, Kay Fesster and Jim Wagner earned silver emblems and Robert Bartley received a bronze. In Dairy Foods competition the Pennsylvania team from Waynesburg placed 16th. Team members Karen Fessler and Brian Hamish received silver emblems in individual competition. Participants in this contest test 10 milk samples by sight and taste to determine the flavor and odor of the samples. Contestants also identify samples of hard cheeses, score sediment pads and milker units and take two tests en compassing milk production and marketing. They also perform the California mastitis test on samples of milk and must participate in two problem solving events. A Pennsylvania team placed 13th in the National Forestry Contest. In this contest, FFA’ers test their judging and identification skills in floriculture products. They take a written exam testing general knowledge of plant anatomy, growing media and floral design. They are also evaluated on their ability to make floral arrangements and a cor sage, prepare cuttings for propagation and identify plant disorders. A Pennsylvania team from Willow Street captured 11th place in the Nursery/Landscape Contest. Team members James Hess, Jr. and Julie Haldeman received gold emblems, while team mate Tammy Bresch earned a bronze emblem. Joseph Schott of Lebanon started the event by shearing a lamb with hand shearers. Ken Jacobson of Shear Delights provided the sheep, a white Border Leister/Romney cross ewe. The fine quality fleece was spun into yarn by guild members Diane sylvania team brought home a silver emblem for their 14th place win. Team members Kay and Fay Lobaugh of BiglerviUe received silver emblems in individual competition and team mate Henry Seidel, also of BiglerviUe, earned a bronze. This contest measures the ability to apply economic principles in analyzing farm businesses. A three-man team from New Holland captured ninth place in the National Agricultural Mechanics contest. Team members Darryl Weaver, John Brofee and Roy Aument all earned gold emblems in individual competition. The Ag Mechanics Contest tests knowledge and skills in this area. Zerphey, current president of the Barefoot Treadlers, explained the different processes that transform the wool into the finished shawl. The Barefoot Treadlers is a Lebanon based guild, but has members from Lancaster, Dauphin, Schuylkill and Berks counties.
