PFA Names ‘Outstanding Young Farm Co HERSHEY - Each year the Pennsylvania Farmers’ Association presents its Out standing Youth Farm Couple award to couples under the age of 30 who have exhibited exemplary farming skills and leadership ability. Of the five couples named for regional honors this year, Mark and Cindy Stern of Clinton County were named state winners. The couple will represent PFA at the annual meeting of the American Farm Bureau Federation to be held in Anaheim, Calif, in January. Residing near Lock Haven, the Sterns farm 533 acres of vegetables and grain in part nership with Mark’s father. Crops include 80 acres of processing tomatoes, 20 acres of green tomatoes, 165 acres of com, 20 acres of peppers, 220 acres of wheat, 25 acres of artichokes and three acres of strawberries. Mark also operates a three-truck fleet started in 1980 to insure delivery of the tomato crop. Mark is currently president of his county farmers’ association and past chairman of PFA’s Young Farmer and Ran cher Committee. He serves on the board of the newly-created PFA Legal Defense Fund. Cindy chairs the county women’s committee. Receiving the other four regional awards were: Gary and Barbara Lentz of Lebanon, Lebanon County. Gary started with a herd of 20 cows while in high school and now milks 70 cows on a rented 220-acre farm. Dairy production is currently 20,021 pounds per cow with 719 pounds butterfat. Their eventual goal is to increase herd size and own their own farm. Barbara is 1986 chairman of the Lebanon County Dairy Promotion Com mittee. Owen and Henrietta McCulloch of Newville, Cumberland County, operate a 275-acre dairy farm in partnership with Owen’s brother. The family’s goal is to expand the dairy herd from 30 cows to 60 or 70 head while maintaning low overhead by using their own time, labor and available funds to remodel an old bam into a free-stall operation. Owen is a county farmers’ association director and Henrietta is editor of the county association’s newsletter. Dennis and Penny Reiman of Berlin, Somerset County, operate a 100-head registered Holstein dairy farm. Dennis supplements the dairy operation with custom work and cash crops of com, oats, straw and hay. Since taking over the family farm, the Reimans have increased com acreage and im proved haylage. They have also cut dairy costs by reducing veterinary calls and doing most of their own artificial breeding. Penny is active on the Somerset County Dairy Promotion Com mittee. Dennis is director of the county association’s PROFITS committee. Dale and Paula Wack of Har mony, Butler County, milk 50 cows in partnership with Dale’s brother Jay.
