Board Reviews Dairy Center Proposals ARLINGTON, Va At as Oct. 30 to 31 Board Meeting in Min neapolis, Minn., the National Dairy Promotion and Research Board reviewed the status of the Dairy Center selection process and funded the continuation of 29 contracts for nutrition research. The National Dairy Board received 12 proposals for the development of Dairy Food Research Centers, representing 32 universities/institutions. The proposals represent all regions of the country. The review and selection process is underway. Each proposal will be studied by a technical and a management review committee before being considered by the product research and development com mittee of the National Dairy Board. The Board anticipates an nouncing the Dairy Center sites after the first of the year. It has allocated $1.5 million per year for five years as “seed” money to Lancaster Fanning, Saturday, November 6,1986-A3l create these centers. Centers will be funded one-third from the Board, one-third from the local industry and one-third from the university or institution. In addition, the Board approved $241,398 to fund three new product research projects. One of the projects will be jointly funded with the Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board and the National Cheese Institute, and will study listeria in milk and milk products. It will be conducted at the University of Wisconsin. The Board also took action to continue funding 29 nutrition research projects in the amount of $3,060,569. During 1985 to 1986, the Board funded 51 projects. Of those 51,22 will be completed in 1986. The remaining 29 projects will be funded through 1987. The nutrition education and research committee is reviewing new research projects to present to the Board. New research is being studied with input from the Board’s newly- formed industry review mittee. In the Advertising and Promotion area, the Board committed over $600,000 in con sumer and trade advertising to sell more cheese during National Pizza Week, slated for Jan. 18 to 24,1987. This action includes tagging the cheese commercials focusing on pizza, purchasing additional network air time, and placing advertising in “Pizza Today,” the trade magazine of the pizza in dustry.
