star Faming, Saturday, September 20,1956 Solanco Fair Dairy Show Becomes Famil QUARRYVILLE - You might have called it a family affair when the top ribbons were passed out Thursday afternoon at - the Southern Lancaster County Fair Holstein Show at Quarryville. Leroy and Lloyd Welk, Quarryville, under the farm name of Welk Acres, won the Covenant Primier Breeder Award. And Paul Welk and Sons, Peach Bottom, won the Premier Exhibitor Banner. The senior and grand champion was an aged cow, Welk Acres Chief Marie for Welk Acres. This white cow that Judge Jane Pepple called well balanced with an excellent udder is home bred on both the sire and dam side. She made over 22,000 pounds of milk as a four year old. Welk Acres also had the best three females and the best dairy herd. The reserve senior and reserve grand champion was Fultonway Sexation Sabrina, an Ocean view Sexation Daughter that won for Mark Welk. This first place three year old was fresh three weeks and was milking over 100 pounds a day at show time. She was also named grand champion of the Junior Division. Mark Welk also had the first place produce of dam and the first place dam and daughter. The Kauffman sisters won the open show junior grand and junior reserve grand championship. Karen Kauffman, 13, had the junior champion with her first place intermediate calf. And Sandy Kauffman, 10, had the reserve junior champion with the first place junior calf. The reserve junior champion of the open show was also the reserve grand champ of the junior division. The winners are daughters of Mr. & Mrs. Robert L. Kauffman, Jr., Peach Bottom. Judge Pepple said, “The quality in the 107 head show was super. You couldn’t disregard anything, even at the bottom of the classes,” she said. Colored Breeds Wednesday’s dairy show at the Solanco Fair featured Jerseys, Ayrshires and Guernseys com peting for top honors in their respective breeds. Hillacrcs Jerseys, owned by the William and Geraldine Arrowsmith family of Peach Bottom, claimed the Jersey premier breeder and premier exhibitor banners. Their show string claimed three open championships as well as the youth show grand and reserve grand championships. Tom Arrowsmith’s Excellent 4- year-old cow, Hillacres Surville May, took reserve grand champion honors. This cow topped the Lancaster County 4-H Jersey show in July and stood first in her class at the South-Central District Show. She retained her championship position of the youth show, besting Tom’s senior yearling. The senior yearling, sired by Samson, claimed the junior championship. Tom, 18, and his sisters, Helen, 16, and Sarah, 19, exhibited a total of 13 head in the Jersey show. Inspite of their impressive show string, the top honor eluded them. The grand champion rosette of the Jersey show went to Robert Ulrich of Quarryville. His 2-year-old champion was homebred on both sides of her pedigree. Valley-U Rebel Arlene produced 13,700 pounds of milk and 710 pounds of fat in her first lac tation. Robert give the-credit for the championship to his children: Tim, 15, Jennifer, 12, and Stephanie, 9. “The kids picked out which cows were going and then got them ready,” he said. Robert and Linda Ulrich milk a 100 Jerseys with a rolling herd average of 13,800 pounds of milk and 680 pounds of fat. In the Solanco Ayrshire Show, Warren Schmuck of Peach Bottom earned the grand championship honors with his 11-year-old cow. Warren purchased Holly’s Pride Jill, EX-92, this spring at the William Ocker herd dispersal. A veteran showman of the Solanco Fair, he also showed the reserve grand champion, Pinelane Hi Rachel. Winning didn’t stop with the two champions for Warren. His sister, Karen Hambrick, captured the premier breeder and premier exhibitor banners for the Ayrshire show. Karen showed 10 Ayrshires. Brian and Craig Nolan showed the grand and reserve 'grand champions of the youth show. They are the sons of Robert and Sharon Nolan, Parksburg. Steve Wagner, age 14, returned to the winner’s circle for the third time with Bo Joy Telestar April. A 3-year-old daughter of Maurana Wil Telestar, she freshened on Aug. 27 with a heifer calf. Steve is the son of Robert and Joyce Wagner, Quarryville. He also claimed the reserve junior championship while his brother, Scott, took the junior championship. Reserve grand champion went to Dave Mull’s 4-year-old cow. Dave claimed the reserve spot last year with his senior yearling. This FFAer is the son of Clair and Ida Mull, Quarryville. The Mulls own a herd of 95 Guernseys and 20 Holsteins. James McCaffree of Delta, York County, judged the 70 head show. His placings follow.
