mcasi BY BETSY STITT Blair County Correspondent MARTINSBURG - FFA and 4-H livestock exhibitors from across Blair County brought market hogs, lambs and steers to Morrison’s Cove Memorial Park on Aug. 19 for a busy yet rewarding day at the annual livestock show and sale. During the day, quality classes throughout the show presented Judge Brenda Walters from York County with a difficult job in grand champion selection. During the evening, Gene Gontis auctioned off the animals at prices that satisfied everyone in at tendance. John Dowey, a recent graduate of Williamsburg High School, exhibited the grand champion steer. Buddy, a 1,150-pound Chiania cross, garnered a price of $5 per pound, for a total selling price of $5,750, from Boss’s Steak and Seafood House. While John has shown at many swine shows, this is his first year showing steers. Yet, he went onto win both the champion showing and grooming trophies. Christine Rhodes, Martinsburg, a ninth grader at Spring Cove Junior High School, showed the reserve grand champion steer. Giant Eagle Supermarket paid $2 per pound for her 1,048-pound, Angus-cross steer. The sale’s 27 steers averaged 90 cents per pound without the champions. This average is 26 cents above top market price. Robbie Stultz, son of Mrs. Marsha Stultz of Williamsburg, exhibited the grand champion hog, a 230-pounds Duroc cross. Robbie, a member of the 4-H Swine Club, sold his champion to Shaw Packing Company for a sale record of $5 per pounds or a total of $1,150. Corina Frye, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Frye of Williamsburg, showed the reserve champion hog. Her 244-pound entry sold to Moss’s Steak and Seafood House for $3.75 per pound and a total of $915.
