Correspondent KUTZTOWN - “You have an excellent show out here today,” stated Norman Hill as he was judging the Eastern Pennsylvania Championship Holstein Show in Kutztown last Saturday. Although the number of entries were down from previous years, the beautiful sunny day featured some of the finest cattle of the Holstein breed. For the fourth consecutive year, the grand championship was captured by Rothrock Golden Holsteins, Kempton. Their entry, Yarrabee Simon Elissa, a dry 2 year old, is due in one week to Walk Chief Mark. Sired by Har mony Comers Simon, the stylish young cow boasts a first record of 20,690 pounds of milk with a 4.0 percent test and 833 pounds of fat in 353 days at 1 year and 9 months of age. She was named All-lowa Junior 2 Year Old in 1985 and is currently scored VG-87. Her dam, Yarrabee Starcraft Ellie has a 4-year-old record of 22,130 milk, 4.2 percent test and 919 fat in 365 days. The champion was bred by Maynard Lang and sons. Rothrock’s Golden Holstein Farm also went home with the junior championship rosettes. Their intermediate yearling entry, Walk-Up Valiant Lou-Anna-ET, caught the judge’s eye for this championship spot. Sired by S-W-D Valiant, the junior champion boasts an Excellent, 3E-94, All- American dam with records over 24,500 milk and 4.2 percent test. She also has a full sister scored EX-92 with records over 33,400 milk and a 4.6 percent test. She was bred by Teresa Myers. Bred by W. Donald Seipt, Keystone Pete Dot- ET was also named best udder in her class. The reserve junior champion of the Open Show went to the entry of Scott Troutman, Reu-Hel Farms, Mohrsville. His senior heifer, Reu- Hel Farms Starwars Queenie, is sired by Hardy’s Starwars. In the youth division, Troutman’s entry was junior champion. After a break of a few years, the Donald Hostetter family of Maplebound Farm, Parksburg, came back to capture both the premier breeder and premier exhibitor banners of the show. Veteran exhibitors at this show, Hostetter stated that his family was usually able to win one or the other banners. After missing them last year, the family was honored when their homebred entries captured the premier banners once again. Maplebound Ultimate Dove, Hostetler’s fancy 6-year-old cow led the farm’s way to the banners with the winning of the best bred and owned title. Sired by Quality Ultimate, the aged cow was also named best udder in her class. In the youth Division of the show, Duane Stoltzfus, Morgantown, and his 5-year-old entry, Pennwood Earl Sophia were named the grand champions. Reserve grand went to Cathleen Ohlinger, Mohrsville, Reu-Hel Farms, with her 3 year old, Reu-Hel Farms Mars Bailey. According to Bill Nichols of the Pennsylvania Holstein Association, the championship show provided a perfect setting for a Brazilian delegation attending the festivities in Kutztown this past week. Looking for premier Holsteins, the delegation hopes to , purchase a total of 500 head with 400 already selected. “They’re looking for triple plus sires, dams with 18,000 plus, and Very Good to Excellent dams,” Nichols related. The Eastern Pennsylvania Championship Show provided Pennsylvania breeders the best opportunity to show their finest to the delegation.
