Veteran BY MARTHA J. GEHRINGER QUARRYVILLE - Familiar pairs stood at the top of the classes at the Lancaster County 4-H show on Wednesday. Tom McCauley, Elizabethtown, returned to the grand champion position in the Holstein show, with Queen Star Sexy, having claimed this title in two previous 4-H shows. McCauley purchased this 5-year old as a 6-month-old calf. She has gone on to be a winner at the Southeast District 4-H show, twice grand champion and in the milk bucket as well. As a 5-year-old, she is projected at over 29,000 pounds of milk. During Wednesday’s show, this 15-year-old showman also stepped into the reserve grand champion spot with his 3-year-old, Metcalf’s Valiant Beauty, sired by Valiant. She is also working on a record over 20,000 pounds of milk. Standing in the junior champion position for the first time was Thomas Barley, Conestoga, with his summer yearling. He proudly admits, “I really worked on her to get her look this nice.” The reserve junior champion title went to Karen Kauffman, Peach Bottom, and her in termediate calf. This fancy calf from the Sukavin herd has a strong pedigree. Her dam classified Very Good as a 2-year-old and her dam scored Excellent as a 4-year-old. Janice Garber, Willow Street, won the top positions in the Guernsey show as her junior yearling, Willows Admiral Doll, took the grand champion position while her intermediate yearling, Willows Fayette Toshya, took the reserve champion position. Janice Garber earned both the grand and reserve grand placings in the Lancaster 4-H Guernsey show. ...•■ling v gL _ .pion I ■ Ayrshire show for the first time were Michele Gordon (right) with her grand champion and Dana Clark with his reserve grand champion. Judge Stephen Neeley placed her over the reserve grand champion based on her strength in dairy character. Janice admitted Toshya carried a little too much flesh and is looking forward to seeing how they will place at the district show. Steven Wagner, Quarryville, rounded out the champion placings with his senior champion, Boy Joy Telestar April. The Arrowsmiths, Peach Bot tom, reclaimed their dominance of the Jersey show by gamering all of the champion rosettes at the Lancaster 4-H show. Tom Arrowsmith’s 4-year-old, Hillacres Surville May, won the grand champion title as she did at last year’s show. Tom purchased this Vaucluse Sleeping Surville daughter three years ago from his brother Matthew. May’s maturity gave her the advantage in a close placing over the reserve grand champion, according to Judge Neeley. May edged out Tom’s senior 2-year-old entry, Rock Ridge Dequel Apache, for the title. The reserve grand champion had previously placed ninth in the Louisville national show and was named the highest pedigreed calf of the class. Tom also showed the reserve junior champion, Hillacres Samson Delilah. Winning the junior champion title was his sister Helen’s entry, Hillacres Samson Margaret. Last year, Helen showed her junior champion at the state show where she merited a blue ribbon. Dana stood in the reserve grand champion position with his in termediate calf which also placed second to Michele’s entry in the intermediate calf class. Spruce Villa Hi Champ Mandy is a offspring from Dana’s first 4-H animal. In contrast to Michele’s winner, Mandy is “easy to lead, she shows herself off well,” Dana said. Scott Trimble, Peach Bottom, topped the Brown Swiss show with his senior 2-year-old, Marty L. Toto. Last year Toto stood in the winner’s circle at the Southeast District show as junior champion, and placed first in her class at the All-American.
