BY BETSY STITT Staff Correspondent MARTINSBURG - The Central Cove FFA Chapter held its annual banquet April 9 at the Central Cove High School in Martinsburg. South Central vice president Bruce Lemmon offered greetings from the state association and presented Keystone Farmer pins to Carol Frederick, Joel Pheasant and Stanley Kensinger. Each Keystone Farmer also received a $25 savings bond from Lester Longenecker. Carol Frederick received the Ra- Lo Farms Award, which is given to the top senior in academic achievement. Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Glass presented the award. Jay and Debbie Metzger presented the Cove Valley Dairy Award to Mike Burket. Each year a $5O savings bond is presented to the top dairy student. The Galen F. Wineland Award, presented to the top ag mechanics student, went to Larry Kensinger. Joel and Teddie Wineland presented the $lOO savings bond. Jim Bloom presented the Agway Outstanding Farm Accountant Award to Andy Greenleaf, the top record keeper. He received a plaque and savings bond. Foundation medals and proficiency awards went to the following students: dairy production, Mike Burket and Troy Metzler; beef production, John Harker; soil and land management, Melissa Merritts; work experience, Larry Ken singer; crop production, Mike Burket; poultry, Carol Frederick; fruit and/or vegetable production, Mackie Igou; Star Greenhand, Ryan Hinton; Star Chapter Far mer, Andy Greenleaf; and public speaking, Robert Bailey and Shawn Kauradar. Receiving gold medals in the area project book contest were Somerset youth wins 4-H CommodHy Marketing trip UNIVERSITY PARK - A Somerset youth who runs his own antique auto restoration business and raises sheep for profit has won a trip to the 25th annual 4-H Commodity Marketing Sym posium at the Palmer House in Chicago. David C. Antram, son of Robert and Roberta Antram of Somerset, is among 40 youths who were selected by the Cooperative Ex tension Service to attend the event, to be held April 19 through 23. The event is sponsored by the Chicago Board of Trade. Antram was selected for his outstanding 4-H commodity marketing project. Silver medal winners were Carol Frederick, Stanley Kensinger, John Harker, Troy Metzler, and Scott Mowery. Bronze medals went to Melissa Merrits, Randy Rhodes and Mackie Igou. Students who have accumulated years with 4-H for a total profit of 31,039, and he presently owns 40 breeding sheep worth $4,175. The 4- H’er gained skills in purchasing and registering purebreds through the Pennsylvania State University performance sheep sales. Along with his livestock holdings, Antram also restores antique sedans. Two of his suc cesses were a $2,000 Kaiser sedan worth $4,500 after restoration, and a 1953 Kaiser Traveler finished in 1983. For his efforts, Antram won a scholarship and a trip to the 1984 National 4-H Congress as an automotive program national winner. At the symposium, Antram will 60 or more points for leadership involvement and project achievements included Mike Bucket, Andy Greenleaf, Carol Frederick and Stanley Kensinger. Betsy Stitt was recognized for receiving the American Fanner Degree at the 58th National FFA Covention. leant how the basic principles of marketing, distribution and utilization apply to commodities sold in cash markets and traded in futures markets of major ex changes. He’ll participate in seminars, tours and activities involving the use of futures markets as a management tool, and he’ll learn how to apply his market knowledge to ongoing 4-H projects. The symposium includes a visit to the Chicago Board of Trade floor, where participants will meet trade board officials, traders and marketing representatives.
