822-Uncast«r Farming, Saturday, October 26,1985 LITITZ Farmers and farm animals visited elementary schools in two Lancaster County school districts this week as part of Ag in the Classroom, a program developed to help students learn about agriculture. Fourth grade students in the Hempfield and Warwick School Districts got a close look at pigs, cows and other farm animals that area farmers brought to their classrooms. In the Warwick elementary schools Ahda Farrington showed students her Appaloosa horse, and Grace Moyer explained chicken farming. Pat Hess told them about potatoes and general farming, while Leon Good explained dairy farming and brought a dairy calf for them to pet Tina Strauss showed the children two tiny piglets and talked with them about raising pigs. "The youngsters were very excited about the pigs," said Mary Clark, who coordinated the program in this district Meanwhile, students in Hemp field schools were enjoying similar programs in their classrooms. Lancaster County alternate dairy princess Dehnda Tindall talked to the students about dairy products, while Jeff Greider augmented her lesson by offering the students an opportunity to pet a dairy cow and calf. FFA students from Penn Manor took a pig, a lamb, ducks and rabbits to show the students and Deb Hess brought along a calf and talked about raising steers. Brian Hess spoke to the students about raising hogs and Sarah Fleener told them about sheep farming and wool products. Dorothy Brubaker coordinated the program in this district The Ag in the Classroom project made its debut in Lancaster County last October, when a pilot project was done in the Penn Manor School District. The program was successful there and has been implemented in a number of school districts in the county since then. Ag in the Classroom was developed through the combined efforts of the Department of Education, the Department of Agriculture and the Pennsylvania Farmers Association.
