Grubb has reminded the state’s 15,300 dairy farmers that they have until August 20 to vote in the National Dairy Promotion Program referendum. Grubb said, “To remain suc cessful in the 1980’s, farmers must aggressively market and promote their products. For this reason, in light of the successes through the program to date, the Department is recommending dairy farmers vote yes on the referendum. “The choice is yours,” Grubb said. “The program has funded national, regional and state and local dairy promotion and ad vertising programs to increase sales of milk and dairy products for the past year. A positive vote in the referendum will enable these programs to comtinue.” The National Dairy Promotion and Research Program was established by federal legislation which authorized a mandatory 15 cents per hundredweight assessment on dairy farmers’ milk checks for use in a national dairy promotion program. On a volun tary basis, producers can have ten cents of their assessment chan nelled into local advertising programs. Four major regional advertising and promotional efforts are un derway in Pennsylvania, including the Pennsylvania Dairy Promotion Program, and Federal Orders 2,4 and 36. These programs are funded through producers’ voluntary decision to use ten cents for regional marketing efforts. According to Grubb, Penn sylvania dairy cooperative members have been notified of their cooperative’s position. These producers do not have to vote if they support their cooperative’s position. Cooperative members wishing to vote contrary to their cooperative’s position should have received a ballot from the cooperative. Independent dairy producers should contact their local ASCS Office for a ballot and mail it in the envelope provided by August 20. “Dairy producers have become a major force in the market • AGRICULTURAL • INDUSTRIAL • COMMERCIAL AU--STEEL BUILDINGS eou.pmehtjcrop L| VESTOCK tST - ,LE - 30;4I Widtl ml STRAIGHTWAL.L. Grubb said farmers with questions should call the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which is administering the referendum, toU free at 1-800-423-7206. Block hits Congress (Continued from Page Al) tion. Farmers want price and profits, not government controls and payments. “We need export-expanding, market-oriented loan levels that will help farmers to compete as in the past, and expand our core of markets. “Those markets are growing. They’ll grow faster in the years ahead. However, under our current policies, we just aren’t getting our fair share.” Block said the Administration is meeting with farm groups and is entertaining suggestions and new approaches from legislators and interested groups. But, he concluded, ’’the Ad ministration will put its foot down in certain places and certain issues.” JO—— I TWNKNIB I I building; I READ LANCASTER FARMING'S !
