A32-Lancaster Farming, Saturday, November 24,1984 Joe Garber tops Red Rose Roundup BY JACK RUBLEY NEW HOLLAND Fourteen year-old Joe Garber reached the height of his 4-H career on Friday, Nov. 16, by topping Lancaster County’s Red Rose 4-H Beef Roundup held at the New Holland Sales Stables. “This is the best I’ve ever done,” beamed the ninth-grade Donegal student from Maytown, who noted that he has been spending plenty of time working with his blue-ribbon entry. An Angys-Chianina crossbreed bred by J.C. Enterprises of Ringgold, Pa., the steer will end his show career amid stiff com petition in January’s Farm Show. “Ever since Keystone I’ve been pouring on the feed,” noted the son of Mr. and Mrs. David Garber, who escorted his champion to a seventh-place finish in the Keystone International Livestock Expo’s steer show, as well as a first-place finish in his class at the Elizabethtown Fair. After selecting his top mid dleweight steer for grand cham pion honors, judge Erskine Cash of Penn State slapped his reserve champion middleweight for reserve grand honors. The reserve spot went to Manheim’s Kelly Rohrer and her 1210-pound Angus- Chianina steer that had placed first in his class at the Manheim Farm Show. “It seems that there’s never Dlbmli Our Speciality Call For Usad Diasals Let Us Kjbow Your Service Problems 24 HourSfervice Check Our Prices AUTHORIZED PETTER DISTRIBUTOR HOOVER DIESEL SERVICE MW PH. DEALER INQUIRIES INVITED enough you can do,” said the veteran of five years of 4-H competition, noting that she spends many hours fitting her steers before they are ready to enter the show ring. Bred by Wayne Miller of In diana, Miss Rohrer’s steer will also be among the contenders at Farm Show. As Farm Show time draws near, she expects to be walking her steer two miles each day to maintain the animal’s weight and muscling. “It’s going to take a lot of walking to keep him there,” said Miss Rohrer, who is determined to keep her steer in the middleweight division through exercise rather than reduced feed consumption. Other Lancaster County steer exhibitors chosen at the Red Rose Roundup to compete in Farm Show are; Derek Nissley, Heidi Frey, PH: 717-736-2173 Julie Greider, Brian Hess, Michelle Nissley, Jeff Craig, Freida Frey, Emily Weaver, Michelle Dean, Vicky Hess, Fred Weaver, Kurt Kline, Patti Greider, Anna Marie Frey, Kristin Chupp, Gina Bowman, Jodie Weaver, Doug Musser, Fritz Frey, Alida Farrington, Stacey Linton, Greg Musser and Scott Hertzog.
