WASHINGTON, D.C. - Illinois is the 26th state to eradicate brucellosis in swine, a U.S. Department of Agriculture official announced. These states contain 60 percent of the nation’s swine population. “Pork producers in Illinois are to be praised for their dedicated efforts in eradicating this costly disease,” said Bert Hawkins, administrator of USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service. Swine brucellosis is a highly infectious disease that is tran smissible to humans through direct contact with infected animals. The most common sign of the disease in swine is spontaneous abortion.
