Lancaster Farming, Saturday, November 3,1 h ristmas tree thefts FLEMINGTON, N.J. - Before we know it, it will be Christmas. It’s hard to even think about since we’ve had an extremely long In dian summer. But soon enough, it will be time for shopping, snow and Christmas tree selection. Some of you may be aware that some people actually steal trees from homeowners’ properties, golf courses, cemeteries, hotels, highways, nurseries and Christ mas tree farms These un scrupulous Christmas celebrants apparently do not know the true meaning of Christmas. Ag Agents Charlene Costans and Elaine Barbour have been working on stopping evergreen tree theft for nearly three years. They have developed a compound that they believe will work. It is a water soluble pigment that temporarily “disfigures” trees; the tree is orange then rust colored, then the pigment breaks down m ultraviolet light. The compound does not come off easily m water and lasts on the tree for four to six weeks. New growth is not detrimentally ef fected. They are trying to determine the market acceptability and field performance of this product and need your help. They have already worked with some Christmas tree growers, a golf course and the New Jersey Turnpike Authority. This compound has stopped trees from being stolen at these sites. If you have had trees stolen from your property and are willing to have your trees sprayed with this light sensitive compound, please call Elaine Barbour at (201) 788-1338. Spraying will commence around Thanksgiving. Also, the Flemmgton County extension office has the “1984 Choose and Cut” Christmas tree list available In Hunterdon County, you may visit six farms: ATs Tree Farm in Pittstown; Hall Tree Farm in Glen Gardner; Charles Hildebrant in Oldwick, Elizabeth Magmer and Richard Sollner, both m Flemmgton; and Eugene Algers in Cahfon.
