B4—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, October 6,1984 PARENTS CAN HELP CHILDREN IMPROVE SCHOOL WORK A look at last year’s report cards may make both you and your child resolve to see better grades this year. However, you may not know how to help your child because you may not know what is causing the problem. High distractibility is the one trait most responsible for poor The Country Store (Continued from Page B 2) mother and return with items from the store for all her neighbors. “I’d come home with a car or a truck load,” she said. While business started out slow and sporadic, James and Lillian did not abandon their enterprise. Looking back, Lillian said she wonders how they managed to “hang in there.” However, the Zimmermans were swamped with customers during their first anniversary sale. “We didn’t expect such a good turnout,” Lillian said. “After the first day we had the sale, the shelves were bare.” Last year, their anniversary sale drew about 200 customers a day. Lillian hires a full-time employee to help during the anniversary sale and during the busy months of November and December, and her sister helps out whenever she’s needed. During the summer Lillian hires a part-time helper. Lillian said she has helped a number of others start stores like her own. Her advice to them was not to order too much at the beginning. “It you order too heavily, then things set on the shelf too long,” she said. Offering fresh items is an important part of running j suc cessful shop, she noted. Knowing how much and what to order is a skill that comes with experience. “I got a lot better,” Lillian said. “You never really know exactly how much you’ll need, but you can always reorder if you run out.” Experience has taught her that Ladies Have You Heard? By Doris Thomas Lancaster Extension Home Economist school performance. Take time to find out now, early in the school year, whether or not this is the problem. If it is, you, your child and the teacher can work out some at-home strategies to improve school work. Recognize that your child has a certain learning style and is in fluenced by his or her own per sonality characteristics. Some children can get right down to shelves stocked full are more attractive to customers than scantily supplied ones. Lillian’s pleasant personality and her willingness to do special favors for her neighbors is probably another reason why her venture has been so successful. Recently, she prepared an all natural shoo-fly pie for a neighbor as a special order. “I’ll do special things like that for people,” she says. While the store and the bargains it offers attract the customers, the farm setting helps to keep them coming back. The Zimmermans raise turkeys and usually give one away during each day of their anniversary sale in November. However, this year, the avian flu epidemic that plagued Lancaster County prevented them from raising any this year. In addition to the turkeys, the Zimmermans also have a peacock, which customers can usually catch a glimpse of as it struts in the yard, a pony, steers, lots of cats and a swing for the kids. “People like to see those kinds of .things,” Lillian observed, noting that she believes that is part of the reason her store has been so successful. In the spring, the Zimmermans will be moving to a new location, because the farm they rent in Mount Joy has been sold. However, they say they plan to stay in the same area and continue the store. But in the meantime, they will be busily bagging flour and sugar in preparation for the holiday rush that will be here before long. homework after school, motivated to finish so they can go out and play. Others need some active playing time or even some resting time before they can settle down. You can help your child leam more efficiently by showing that you have a respect for learning. Provide a place for your child to study undisturbed. This area should have adequate table space and good lighting. You may want to set aside some agreed upon “homework time” based on your child’s age and the amount of homework assigned. Once again, it may be helpful to discuss this with your child’s teacher. PUT TOGETHER A STAIN REMOVAL KIT It is an axiom that stains are easier to remove from fabrics when treated promptly. The longer the stain remains, the more dif ficult it becomes to remove. But whether they are taken care of promptly or before laundering the items, stains generally require special attention. Many stains will come out in the wash, especially if good laundering techniques are used. Some, however, are more complex and call for pretreatment. So put together a first aid kit for stain removal and be ready for inevitable spots and spills. Start with a stain removal chart. Of course, there are a number of laundry products and aids you may have on hand that can be used in treating some stains - detergent, soap, bleach - chlorine or oxygen, enzyme presoak, prewash soil and stain remover and detergent boosters. Other products stocked in most homes that are also helpful in removing certain stains include ammonia, baking soda and white vinegar. Stain removers that should be part of the kit include a rust remover and solvents such as cleaning fluid, denatured alcohol, rubbing alcohol, turpentine, mineral spirits.
