Recent purchase tops National Guernsey Show BY WENDY WEHR HAKRISBURG-A newly acquired aged cow received the judge’s nod for grand champion at the National Guernsey Show in Harrisburg on Wednesday. Don and David Alexander of Bushy Park Farm, Lynn, Ind., were real pleased with the win of their m ent purchase, Dan Fayvor Pauline. BY WENDY WEHR HARRISBURG—They re not getting older, they’re getting better - at least that's true for the aged cows in this year's All- American Ayrshire Show. The giand and reserve grand cham pions of the show were the first and second place finishers in the aged i ow class The Jon-B-How Farm, Dalton, Ohio, showed the grand champion, Ann Ayr Fortune Aster Judge William Etgen remarked on Aster's balance, style, and sym metry, and her advantage in udder and height. Aster is a seven-year-old daughter ot Ann Ayr Flashy Daisey. Her sire is Oak Ridge Flashy Fortune Aster was named grand champion of the Ohio State Fair, and she will be going on to the North American Expo in Kentucky this fall. The Howman’s of Jon-B- How hope she’ll do well there, too Choosing Aster as grand i hampion was not easy for Etgen, as he remarked that the aged cow class was tremendous all the way through the line. He said this was the best Ayrshire class that he had seen and that it was a real privilege to judge So Ardrossan Kels Soft Eye, second in the aged cow class and reserve grand champion of the show, was a close second to Aster. Soft Eye was shown by Maple Dell Farm, Woodbine, Md. Sired by Oak Ridge Flashy Kellogg, Soft Eye is out of Ar drossan SVC Brown Eye Adrossan Farms was the breeder ot the five-year-old Soft Eye s other titles include giand champion of the 1984 Maryland State Fair The premier breeder and piemier exhibitor banners were taken home by one farm The Halph Shank family of Palmyra farm, Hagerstown, Md captured the premier titles by placing high in the cow and group classes 1 he Shanks won the same honoi s Pauline is a five-year-old out of Chief Micheal’s Paulette. Judge Merton Sowerby, Warrenton, Va., also named Pauline as best udder of the show. The Alexanders purchased Pauline just a few weeks ago following the Maryland State Fair, where she was also named grand champion. The former owner was getting older, just getting better Not at the Maryland State Fair this year The family is proud of their Ayrshires and wouldn’t have any other breed in their herd. Palmyra Farm is a 200-head all-Ayrshire operation. Chestnut Ridge Farm, Amherst, New Hampshire, showed the grand champion bull. The champion was a y earling, C R Starboy Perfect. The premier breeder and premier exhibitor banners were captured by the Wachtel family of the Spring Walk Farm, Big Fraine, Ohio They took first place .prizes in the best three females and exhibitor’s herd group classes and placed fairly con sistently in the top three in the cow classes. The Spring Wals Farm is a three-generation operation, which includes Floyd and Eileen Wachtel, son Bill, and their grandson Kurt. Floyd Wachtel began showing (tuernseys more than 50 years ago when he was a 4-H'er. He remarked that he has shown every year since 1929 at the Ohio State Fair This is the first time Spring Walk has taken both the premier banners at the National Show, and the Wachtels were more than pleased with the win. The junior champion Guernseys were shown by Pennsylvania breeders.
