Buying spirited at Lycoming Youth Livestock Sale HUGHESVILLE - Beef, swine and particularly lambs brought robust prices at the Sixth Annual Youth Livestock Sale held July 19, at the Lycoming County Fairgrounds in Hughesville. Eleven beef animals, 27 lambs and 26 hogs were sold at above average prices. The grand champion lamb sold for $5 per pound, nearly 10-times its normal market value. Owned by Heather Ream (118 Ag 4-H) of Hughesville, the grand champion steer was purchased by John Fritz of Sunset Ice Cream, Williamsport. The 1100-pound entry sold for $1.45 per pound. Ream dominated the steer com petition, showing the reserve champion, as well. This 1115-pound animal went to Statewide Fur niture of Bloomsburg for 91 cents a pound. Owned by Montoursville FFA member Dan Albert, the 102- pound lamb went for $5 a pound. Reserve champion lamb honors went to Bottle Run 4-H’er Shane Corter who sold his 110-pound entry to Northeastern Farm Credit for $4.75 a pound. Hatfield Packing Company bought the grand champion hog owned by Paula Jordan (118 Ag 4- H) of Unityville. Weighing 225 pounds, the top porker went for $5 a pound. Chris Snyder’s 220-pound hog grabbed reserve champion honors and went to Web Snyder, Inc. of Watsontown for |2.55 a pound. Chris is another 118 Ag 4-H member. Champion hog in the senior division was owned by Suzanne Seyler, a Bald Eagle 4-H member from Montgomery. Her 255-pound ntry - ild for $1.30 to Danvillr Buying Station of Danville. Another Bald Eagle 4-H’er, Susan Eck, showed the reserve senior champion. Her 205-pound hog went to Ed Snook of OK Hog Farm, Jersey Shore, for $1.20. Also sold to the highest bidder, Springman’s Nursery of Muncy, was a pair of steer horns donated by Vigortone Agricultural Products. The horns’ sale price of $175 was donated to the Youth Livestock Committee. Other buyers purchasing a substantial number of animals at the sale were Don Waltman of Waltman’s Meats in Williamsport, who bought eight animals; Witmer Bros, of the Dewart Livestock Market, who also purchased eight animals; and Oscar Baumert of Herndon who bought nine animals. Masters of ceremonies for the sale were Lycoming County Commissioners Gene Smith, Dolly Wilt and Lora Morningstar. Fair secretary, Mary Anne Heydenreich was also present along with county agents Bill Messersmith and John Carr.
