June FLEMINGTON, N.J. - June is declared in New Jersey as the “Month of the Horse.” It has been so proclaimed by Governor Thomas Kean in a brief ceremony in his office recently. The intent is to bring to the attention of the public the prominence of the horse in the state. Many activities and events have been scheduled for June to celebrate the state animal...the horse. Dairy farmers and dairy in dustry leaders are quick to respond to this. They remind us that “June is Dairy Month”...and that it is a national observance. Locally, they remind us that there are more cows than horses in Hunterdon County, and that the cow is involved in the production of “nature’s most nearly perfect food.” The horseman counters with figures and statements that sup port his or her contention that the horse industry, which continues to grow in the county and state, in deed contributes significantly to the economy and the long-range efforts to retain farmland and open space. The friendly rivalry goes on with each group promoting its respective segment of our agricultural community.
