A32—Lancaster Fanning, Saturday, April 14,1984 No-till NEWARK, Del. - No-till has become such a popular production practice in Delaware that the state now leads the nation in percentage of total no-till acreage. Having helped introduce this cropping system to local growers over the past decade, University of Delaware extension specialists today are busy developing refinements which will further increase its benefits. Among problems to be solved are soil compacticr and poor seed ger mination - especially com - in cold, wet ground. Better weed control programs for no-till com and full-season no-till soybeans are also needed. Extension agronomist Frank Webb, has devoted much of his time in recent years to developing such production refinements. He believes one way to get faster seedling emergence and more uniform stands may be to modify the seedbed, using an in-row subsoiler. This appears to improve seedling emergence and sub sequent yields, particularly in no till com. The process involves running a shank into the soil to a depth of 8 or 16 inches directly beneath the row immediately before planting com or soybeans. Except for this in-row tillage, farmers would follow a regular no-till program. In field trials over the past two years results have been very promising, Webb says, and he will be in vestigating the program further this summer. Farmers who grow no-till com will have some new herbicide options this year, the specialist NEW JOHN DEERE EQUIPMENT Pre-Season Sale WAIVER OF FINANCE UNTIL 1/1/85 ON TRACTORS .JOHN DEERE JD 2550 Tractor MFWD JD 4050 Tractor Sound-gard body, MFWD, Power Shift JD 4250 Tractor Sound-gard body, MFWD, Power Shift JD 148 Loader Mountings (2B4o-2940) JD 260 Loader Mountings (2B4o-2940) JD 37 Loader 60” Bucket only JD 75 Loader Bucket only-53” JD3R 30” Com Head JD 550 Sprayer 40 Ft. He has been studying the use of Bladex in a no-till production system and says the chemical has been cleared for this use on com for the 1984 growing season. The material is effective on both broadleaved and grassy weeds when applied as recommended in combination with other soil residual chemicals. “We have found that when used at the proper rates on weeds at the proper height, we can get very effective control of existing JD 8200 Grain Drill 18x7 Plain Drill, Gauge-o-Matic Opener, Grass Seed Att. Webb also is working on a similar herbicide program for full season no-till soybeans. Effective weed control is critical with this cropping system, which is gaining momentum on Delmarva, par ticularly in Delaware. He is in vestigating the use of Bladex in combination with other residual materials - particularly Surflan - as part of a total cropping plan.
