B22—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, January 14,1984 Draft horse show features Clydesdales, Belgians, Percherons BY LAURA ENGLAND FARM SHOW - Taking home championship trophies is nothing new for the four draft horse breeders who won grand champion awards during the Belgian, Clydesdale and Percheron shows Monday All four breeders, Alfred Reist of Eden Road, Lancaster; Abraham Allebach of R 2 Spring Mills; James and Dail Corl of Old Get tysburg Road, State College; and John and Susan Cole of R 1 Centre Hall, are successful draft hor semen who have captured championship wins throughout their show circuits The Farm Show competition proved no dif ferent. Alfred Reist, of Lancaster County, exhibited both the grand champion Belgian stallion and mare. His stallion winner, Orn dorff’s Highland Premier, is a 1- year-old bred by Charles B. Orn dorff and Chnstin 0. Lemley of Waynesburg. Premier is a repeat winner at the Farm Show having captured the reserve champion title as a foal last year. Reist’s Belgian mare winner is a 4-year-old named Orndorff’s Rosette Finality. A quality mare, Reist said Finality is considered one of the best mares in the North American continent. Raising quality Belgian with the goal to have the best of the breed in the North American continent, Alfred and his twin brother Arthur raise eight Belgians on land they rent from Mrs. Raymond Stoner The brothers have been raising the breed since 1975. "We study our horses like a doctor studies medicine,” Arthur said. "We try to model our horses after national champions.” Gerald Allebach, Spring Mills, sets up his Clydesdale champion mare, Double A Contessa. Dressed in his hitching contest garb is Bardrill Am bassador, the Clydesdale champion stallion owned by James Corl of State College. Reserve grand champion Belgian stallion honors went to Contractor’s Greenvale, exhibited by Lewis and G. Biddle and Family of Boalsburg. The grand champion mare was Mountain Echo Molly also owned by the Biddle Family In Clydesdale competition, James and Dail Corl, of Centre County, walked off with grand champion stallion honors. The 6- year-old winner, Bardnll Am bassador, was previously named the grand champion stallion at the 1983 Ohio State Fair. The Corls, who raise 13 Clydesdales along with some quarter horses, also won the reserve grand champion mare title. The winner was Ironwood Sweet Wanda Rose. Abraham Allebach, also a Centre County horseman, earned grand champion mare honors with his Clydesdale, Double A Contessa The 8-year-old mare was named grand champion at the Indiana State Fair the past two years. The champion mare is the only Clydesdale the Allebachs own. According to Gerald Allebach, the family showed Contessa for her original owners last year but liked her enough to buy the mare for themselves. Percheron breeders by trade, the Allebachs plan to wait and see how Contessa’s offspring look before making any decisions about raising the breed "We’re fussy about the mares we buy,” Gerald said. "What you buy in mares is what you have ’ ’ That type of thinking has paid off for the Allebachs who won the grand champion mare title ir the Percheron show The grand winner was 4-year-old Beth Mill The reserve champion was Koncar Miracle Misty owned by James M 1984 Pa. Farm Show Cole and Son of R 1 Spring Mills. Grand champion stallion honors also went to a Centre County exhibitor. John and Susan Cole, who raise a purebred herd of 15 Percherons, won the title with 2- year-old Glynlea’s Pride. Im ported from Western Canada, Pride was purchased to bring new blood into the Cole herd. Pride won the Farm Show title over the two-time champion, Mystic Did-It. Owned by the Allebachs, Mystic Did-it earned reserve grand champion stallion honors this year Following are the top three class placmgs in the Belgian, Clydesdale and Percheron shows BELGIAN SHOW 5 Years & Older Stallion 1 Shir ley & Jerry Ray 3 Year to 4 Stallion I Lewis &G Biddle & Family 2 Year to 3 Stallion I Elmer D & Elvm D I app 2 Larry B Orndorff Sr 3 Everett G Wagner 1 Year to 2 Stallion 1 Alfred G Reist 2 Lewis &G Biddle & Family 3 Bradley H Orndorff Foal Stallion 1 Larry B Orndorft 2 J Herbert Frantz 3 Lewis 4 G Biddle & Family Senior Champion Stallion Lewis&G BiddleA Family Reserve Sr Champion Stallion Shirley 4 Jerry Ray Junior Champion Stallion Alfred G Reist Reserve Jr Champion Stallion Lewis 4 G Biddle & Family Grand Champion Stallion Alfred G Reist Reserve Grand Champion Stallion Lewis 4 G Biddle 4 Family Any Age Bred By Exhibitor Stallion I Larry B Orndorff Sr 2 J Herbert Frantz 3 Charles B Lindsay 5 Year & Older Mare 1 Lewis & G Biddle & Family 2 Elmer D Lapp 3 Charles 8 Lindsay 4 Year Old Mare 1 Alfred G Reist 2 LukeEiEL Bruckhart 3 Paul D Smoker 3 Year Old Mare 1 Latrryß Orndorff Sr 2 Year Old Mare 1 J Herbert Frantz 2 Christina 0 Lemley 3 Lewis 4 G Biddle 4 Family 1 Year Old Mare 1 HA Goal 2 Elmer D Lapp 3 Larry B Orn dorff Sr Foal mare 1 H A Goal 2 Larry B Orndorff Sr 3 H A Goal Senior Champion Mare 1 Allred G Reist Reserve Sr Champion Mare 1 Lewis AG Biddle & Family Junior Champion Mare 1 J Herbert Frantz Reserve Jr Champion Mare Christina 0 Lemley Grand Champion Mare 1 Alfred G Resit Res Grand Champion Mare lewis AG Biddle & Family Any Age Bred By Exhibitor 1 Christina 0 Lemley 2 HA Goal 3 FtrnerD Lapp Jr Get Of Sire Under 2 Years ] H A Goal 2 Larry B Orndorft Sr 3 J Herbert Frantz Open Get Of Sire 1 AlfredG Reist 2 lewis&G Biddle & Family 3 Flmer D Lapp Belgian Produce of Mare 1 HA Goal 2 Larry B OrndorffSr 3 Finer D Lapp Mare and Foal 1 John&Jear Welty Frantz Stallion and 2 Mares Any Age 1 Lewis A G Biddle & Family 2 1 Herbert Frantz 3 Larry B Orndortl Sr 2 Mares Belonging to 1 Exhibitor 1 Lewis AG Biddle & Family 2 HA Goal 3 J He* bert Frantz 3 Years Or Older Gelding 1 ?
