Extension Office to over 900 farmers .within the next week or so. It’s as big or bigger than ever... and as important to farmers as ever! This publication, 76 pages in length, is prepared by the Internal Revenue Service, with the help of Cooperative Extension specialists, and distributed by county Ex tension Service offices. It explains how the federal tax laws apply to farming. It’s useful for part-time, as well as, full-time farmers. If you file a farm tax return, this guide will help. Changes In Tax Laws Recent changes to the tax law and other items that affect taxes this year are highlighted. There are changes in investment credit; there are options to deduct up to $5,000 of the cost of certain business assets bought during ’B3. Described are provisions relating to reporting PK, also procedures for tax deposits made after 1983. There are new coupons for tax deposits. The old FTD forms are out this year. It is pointed out that ’B3 is the third stage of the 3-year tax rate reduction. A comprehensive summary of the tax law changes affecting 1983 and 1984 is available. There’s the list of important dates for certain actions, payments, & reports. There’s an excellent reminder to keep good records. Rutgers has a very good record book, available at nominal cost in the Extension office. If farmers prepare their own'lßS return, it is essential. And, if someone else does, it can be most helpful in recording all expenses and income for use by the accountant. With tax laws and IRS regulations becoming more and more complicated, we can’t stress enough the value of using a tax practitioner. Accountants and tax specialists keep abreast of changes in the tax laws. Not only can they avoid legal problems for you, but can most often save you money by making use of favorable provisions in the laws. There are many specific tax publications and myriad of forms referred to in the Farmer’s Tax Guide. Most of these are free & available from the Forms Distribution Center, P.O.
