Hunterdon
FLEMINGTON, N.J. - The
annual mailing of the “Farmer’s
Tax Guide” goes out of the Hun
terdon County, N.J. Extension
Office to over 900 farmers .within
the next week or so.
It’s as big or bigger than ever...
and as important to farmers as
ever!
This publication, 76 pages in
length, is prepared by the Internal
Revenue Service, with the help of
Cooperative Extension specialists,
and distributed by county Ex
tension Service offices. It explains
how the federal tax laws apply to
farming.
It’s useful for part-time, as well
as, full-time farmers. If you file a
farm tax return, this guide will
help.
Changes In Tax Laws
Recent changes to the tax law
and other items that affect taxes
this year are highlighted. There
are changes in investment credit;
there are options to deduct up to
$5,000 of the cost of certain
business assets bought during ’B3.
Described are provisions relating
to reporting PK, also procedures
for tax deposits made after 1983.
There are new coupons for tax
deposits. The old FTD forms are
out this year.
It is pointed out that ’B3 is the
third stage of the 3-year tax rate
reduction.
A comprehensive summary of
the tax law changes affecting 1983
and 1984 is available. It is
publication 553, “Highlights of 1983

There are many subjects
covered in the Farmer’s Tax
Guide, besides tax law changes.
There’s the list of important dates
for certain actions, payments, &
reports. There’s an excellent
reminder to keep good records.
Rutgers has a very good record
book, available at nominal cost in
the Extension office. If farmers
prepare their own'lßS return, it is
essential. And, if someone else
does, it can be most helpful in
recording all expenses and income
for use by the accountant.
With tax laws and IRS
regulations becoming more and
more complicated, we can’t stress
enough the value of using a tax
practitioner. Accountants and tax
specialists keep abreast of changes
in the tax laws. Not only can they
avoid legal problems for you, but
can most often save you money by
making use of favorable provisions
in the laws.
There are many specific tax
publications and myriad of forms
referred to in the Farmer’s Tax
Guide. Most of these are free &
available from the Forms
Distribution Center, P.O. Box
25866, Richmond, Va. 23260.
The Hunterdon County Ex
tension Service is located in the
Extension Center, one of three
county buildings on Gauntt Place,
just off Route 31, about a mile
north of Flenungton. The new
address is 4 Gauntt Place,
Flenungton, N.J. 08822.
