Pork Cookout King BV LAURA ENGLAND LANCASTER Manheim’s Eugene Wenger makes his living as a butcher, but it’s his hobby of cooking that has earned him local fame recently. Wenger, competing against six other "master chefs,” was named the 1983 Pa. Pork Cookout King. The honor came during the Pork Month kick off at Lancaster’s Penn Square, Sept. 23. Teamed up with wife Dons, who passed out copies of the recipe and explained its preparation, Wenger manned the grill for over two hours the tune needed to thoroughly cook his homemade creation The “slaving over the grill” paid off as Wenger’s recipe, which calls for one boneless center cut pork loin, won first place. Although the 4-H’ers Win at Delaware Horse Show NEWARK, Del. - The 18th annual State of Delaware 4-H Horse Show was held recently at Sugar Creek Farm in Viola. The show was sponsored by the University of Delaware Cooperative Extension Service and the Delaware 4-H Horse Advisory Committee. Winner of the Bea Campbell Perpetual Trophy for most points in showmanship and equitation was Laura Falconetti, Viola. judges liked its taste and found the dish appetizing, they suggested changing the name, saying "Hog Log” didn’t have quite the appeal. Mrs. Wenger said she and her husband enjoy cooking and run a catering and hog roasting service in addition to their butcher shop. The couple also gives demon strations on pork uses and preparation to civic and com munity groups. Other cookout contestants were Dennis Hartman, Newtnpoli; Henry Angle, Lemaster; Mike Gladfelter, York; Larry Hartman; Newtnpoli; Peter Kroll, Catasoqua; and William Sellers, Chambersburg. Wenger’s winning recipe is found below. In tne niuaer horse uivision, Dana Banks, Frankford, won the championship and Leslie Tyler, Newark, took the reserve cham pionship. Karen Horeis, Felton, had the champion hunter pony, and Pam Morgan, Dover had the reserve champion The champion western horse belongs to Steve Sterling, Smyrna. Laura Falconetti took the reserve championship in this division. Hog Log 1 Boneless Center Cut Pork Loin (with pocket) Stuffing 14 Slices Bread 4 Beaten Eggs 1/2 cup celery 1/4 cup onions 6 T Butter 1 tsp. salt Sauce 1/4 cup fresh mushrooms diced 1T Diced Onions 1/4 lb. butler 3 T Flour 1/2 tsp. salt 2 cups milk Mix all stuffing ingredients & stuff in pocket of pork. Cook 2-2*/s hr. over a gas or charcoal grill. Put butter, mushroom, onion in pan and fry add flour & milk stir till thick. Serve hot on top of Hog log. In the western pony division, Jennifer Klmg, Wyoming, took the championship, and Paul Schulz, Dover, the reserve championship. Heather Nennstiehl, BridgeviUe, won the championship in the English pleasure pony division. Kim Dannenhauer, Camden, took the reserve championship.
