B22—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, September 3,1983 Champions parade in SE FFA dairy show BY ROBIN PHILLIPS Staff Correspondent KUTZTOWN The champions in each of the dairy breeds were chosen in Kutztown on Aug. 25 as the Future Farmers of America in the Southeast Region held their 28th annual regional show. There were over 200 entries from Berks, Bucks, Chester, Lancaster, Lebanon, Lehigh, Northhampton, Montgomery, and Schuylkill counties. Judging was on the Danish system and all blue ribbon winners will be eligible to compete in the state FFA show in Harrisburg held during the week of the Pennsylvania All American. Selecting the Holstein winners was judge Dale Olber, who is with Atlantic Breeders Cooperative. As the Grand Champion Holstein of the show, Olber selected the Very Good-88 entry of David J. Kulp, Rl, Manheim. A five year old, Van-Lan Apache Wanda, featured an ex cellent udder, and is currently milking over 75 pounds a day. Reserve Championship honors went to Russelldale Marvex Christie, owned and shown by Penny Bicksler, Richland, who is from the Tulpehocken Chapter FFA. Getting the Reserve nod at the end of her two-year-old lac tation, “Christie”, has almost completed her two-year-old record with over 15,000 pounds. Also winning the Breeder Exhibitor class with this entry, Penny owns 20 other Holsteins home on the farm of her parents, Ray and Barbara Bicksler. The Junior Champion was owned and shown by Michael L. Mertz, of the Kutztown Chapter. Senation Tower-View Florence is a daughter of Ocean-View Sexation and was shown in the Senior Calf class. The Reserve Junior Championship went to Fultonway Transformer Mandy, owned and exhibited by 15-year-old Kelly Ann Miller from the Solanco Chapter. Also shown in the Senior Calf class, “Mandy" was bred by Mowery Frey, Jr., Willow Street. Bruce WILLIAMSBURG - Ten members of the Williamsburg FFA Chapter accompanied by their advisor, Joseph Very, were in volved in events of the Penn sylvania State FFA Activities Week. The students were involved in judging competition, educational demonstrations, group meetings and recreation activities. Sheila Biddle, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. Edward Biddle of R 1 Williamsburg, won a gold emblem award in the FFA Public Speaking contest. She placed 6th in the contest. David Bishop, son of Mr. and Mrs. David Bishop, Sr., R 2, Williamsburg, won a gold emblem award in land judging. He tied for 13th place in the contest. Brian Ray, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Ray, R 2, Williamsburg, won a gold emblem award in land judging. He placed 11th in the contest. There were 138 par ticipants in the land judging contest. He placed 4th in the contest and will be eligible to drive in the FFA competition at the Pennsylvania Farm Show in January, 1984. Kathy Sollenberger, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David Sollenberger, /R 2, Williamsburg, won. a bronze emblem award in dairy cattle judging. She placed 46th in the contest. There were 160 con testants in the dairy cattle judging contest. The other members who at tended FFA Week and participated in judging contests were Dwight TRENTON, N.J. - Four members of the Future Farmers of America (FFA) have been recommended by the National FFA Board of Directors to receive the American Farmer Degree according to John K. Grover, State Advisor of the New Jersey Association of FFA Chapters. They will be presented during the National FFA Convention held in Kansas City, Missouri, Nov. 10-12. The four New Jersey members named are Dean Fackler, Elmer, member of the Woodstown High School FFA; Robert Hartung, Belvidere, member of the Belvidere High School FFA; John Specca, Mount Holly'; and Robert Wainwright, Columbus, both members of the Northern Burlington High School FFA. Travel awards will be presented to American Farmer Degree recipients to offset their travel expenses to the National FFA Convention in Kansas City. At the 'own Swiss of 4 to get American Degree :heast FFA Dairy daughters of Dr. Robert and Helene Dreisbach, R 3, Hamburg, again took the top placings. Carol Dreisbach with her Senior yearling, Wilderness Baronet Monday, received the judge’s nod for the Grand Championship with judge Samuel Acker stating, “this heifer can stand a lot of com petition”. Carol’s heifer, a daughter of Secret Baronet, went over the Senior Champion, Shadowbrook Samson Honey, owned by her older sister, Patricia. “Honey" received the Reserve Grand Championship over the Reserve Senior Cham pion, Milestones Crystal, owned by David March.
