ELIZABETHTOWN - Cotton candy may beckon a youngster to the fair while homemakers and gardeners may want to scrutinize the rows of handsome canned vegetables. But for farmers, a fair is its animals. In the last several years, the agricultural part of the Elizabethtown Fair has grown by leaps and bounds and 1963 is no exception. This year’s fair, which runs Aug. 30 through Sept. 3, promises to be bigger and better than ever. Highlighting the livestock shows is a new event in which the best of show winners in dairy, beef, sheep and swine competitions will vie for the title of supreme champion. The event is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 1 at 7 p.m. prior to the sale of champions. A committee of judges will select the supreme champion, choosing *chever livestock represen ve is closest to its ideal type. Groff Meats, Inc., of Elizabethtown is sponsoring the award, a cup trophy which the winner will keep for one year. The trophy may be retired only after two consecutive yearly wins by the same exhibitor. Two open dairy shows one for adults and youth from any county in the state and a youth show for youth only will be featured this year in the brand new, 60-by-100-foot livestock facility. Over 100 dairy entries are expected. The open show for adults and youth features six additional classes this year. The beef department is split into two divisions this year a division for 4-H and FFA animals not selling and one for those animals selling at the sale of champions. YORK Plowmen from all over tbe country, representing state' competitors, will be in York, Aug. 11-13, 1983, to vie for the National Plowing Championship and the honor of competing in in ternational competition at the World Ploughing Contest. Construction continuing ELIZABETHTOWN - Two more dates have been set aside for finishing con struction on the new livestock building at the Elizabethtown fairgrounds. The fair association is looking for 20 to 25 volunteers today and on Thursday, from 9 a.m. to noon. The fairgrounds are located along East High Street just east of the elementary school. In addition, a market lambs category is open to youth only. Swine entries are also ex pected to top 100, and this year FFA and 4-H members from six school districts are eligible. They are: Epbrata, Elizabethtown, Manheun, Penn Manor, Donegal and Lower Dauphin. Also, fair officials are hoping to build on last year’s first dairy goat show; a new rabbit hutch has been built for the youth rabbits st schedule charge, although there will be a $l.OO parking fee per vehicle. Agricultural exhibits will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. all three days. Tillage equipment demon strations will take place from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Thursday and Friday. Banquet Tickets can be obtained at the Chamber of Commerce office, at 13 Market Way East, at a cost of 112.50 per person. Banquet tickets will be sold on a first-come, first serve basis, so it is best to pur chase them early in advance of the contest.
