A22—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, August 28,1982 Layman, Milton Hershey top hay and silage show ROCK SPRINGS - While the wet weather that plagued more than a few hay fields early this summer had fanners wondering about the quality of their crop, fanners like Douglas Layman of Waynesboro saw his hard work payoff. The Franklin County farmer had a Grand Champion hay sample during the annual Pennsylvania Hay and Silage Show, held in conjunction with Ag Progress Days. • Layman’s sample, a later cut ting of alfalfa with less than 10 percent dry matter, tested in at: crude protein - 23.9 percent; acid detergent fiber - 27 percent; total digestible nutrients - 70.7 percent. Reserve Grand champion honors went to Du Mar Farm of Harleysville, Montgomery County. The reserve Grand sample, as was the Grand Champion entiy, was field cured plus mow finished with no hay preservative. Du Mar’s alfalfa-grass mix ended with a test of: CP-20.7 percent; ADF-30.7 percent; TDN-67.3 percent. In the hay crop silage division, Milton Hershey Schools of Dauphin County, once again, finished in the winner’s circle with their low moisture mostly legume sample. The winning entry tested at; dry matter - 48.4 percent; CP-23.1 - percent; ADF-29.7 percent; TDN -68.7 percent; pH-5.2. William Meams, Jr. of Get tysburg collected Reserve Grand Champion honors with his direct cut grass silage. Meams’ low moisture sample tested at; DM-66 percent; CP-20.1 percent; ADF -40.4 percent; TDN-60.5 percent; pH-4.6. West Alexander Small Grains, Low moisture 1 Herman Espy Lazarus boar tops Pa. performance sale UNIVERSITY PARK - A pen of 6-month-old Yorkshire boars, sired by CLLB Bob’s Tank 7-1, collected the high bids during the Com monwealth’s sth Performance Tested Boar Sale, Wednesday at the Pennsylvania - Meat Animal Evaluation Center. Bred by Calvin Lazarus and Sons of Busy Acres Farm, Whitehall, lot number one from the high indexing pen brought $1,300 and was purchased by the New Jersey Department of Corrections. The pen arrived at the Fenn State test site on April 20. With an average daily gain of 2.43 pounds, the top Yorkshire finished the testing period at 251 pounds and reached the target weight of 230 pounds in 142 days. Ultra-some tests measured the boar’s back fat at .72 inches, loin eye at 5.18 square inches and lean cut at 62.4 percent. The boar's littermate, me second animal across the auction block, brought the next-high bid of $1,050, also from the New,--Jersey Department of Corrections. The boar had an average daily gam of 2.43 and finished at 248 pounds. Back fat measured in at .81 inches, lom eye at 4.98 square inches and lean cut at 61.1 percent. Nineteen Pennsylvania pens and one Delaware, pen comprised the sale’s offerings. According to Bob Kimble, director of the Fa. Meat Animal Evaluation Center, 44 boars that sold averaged $527 per head. The figure was just $l3 less than last year’s record-breaking average. The animals were dispersed in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, West Virginia and New York.
