In a 12-site central Missouri study, researchers found stable fly larvae or pupae in the under surface of most bales stored outdoors—unless the bales were wrapped in plastic or stored on crushed rock. The study was con ducted by entomologists Robert D. Hall, University of Missoun- Columbia, and Gus Thomas, USDA's Agricultural Research Service. Thomas works out of the USDA’s SADOiC UP! Hall and Thomas found that hay bales in a state of decay during the wet summer appeared less attractive to stable flies than actively fermenting bales that were only aQp few months old. Thomas said farmers can reduce spoilage and stable fly breeding sites by. (1> aligning bales on a north-to-south axis to permit sunlight penetration under rounded edges, (2) moving bales to well drained sites, and (3) leaving a space between bales to promote drainage. I
