But a number of these visitors also stopped to admire the at tractive farm signs that hung above the pens or stalls. Quite a few of these signs, particularly in the sheep area, were the product of the talented hands of Anne Rohrer, Rl, Quarryville - a name well known among Southdown exhibitors and breeders. “As both an artist and sign painter, I’m able to combine both in the signs,” she said. “The sign work is taking me away from the oil paintings, but just about 80 percent of the signs I’m doing now have art work in them.” A stroll through the sheep area showed that Mrs. Rohrer is equally adept at all breeds. Besides the Southdown sign for her son and daughter, Gerald and Barbara, she painted the Hampshire and Shropshire sign for Tim and Sarah Fleener and the Dorset sign for the Herrs, both of Lancaster County. But her talents are not limited to sheep representations on signs. She’s done signs for Holstein, beef and numerous other types of farm operations. For a specific breed of livestock, all she needs is a photo to work from. Then, it’s altogether possible Yoder family sweeps Milking Shorthorn class pionships with Pinesedge Alfair Carleen, a 4-year-old cow. David R. and D.L. Whiting of R 1 Edinburg in Lawrence County, won the reserve junior cham pionship with a junior heifer calf, Wonda’s Lady. Sam Yoder’s Pinesedge Farm also won the premier breeder and premier exhibitor awards. In the youth classes, Wendy Yoder captured the grand and senior championships, also with Clayside Cinderella 6th. Wendy’s senior calf also earned her the titles of reserve grand and that a sign that can proudly stand at the end of your lane along the road will show your favorite dairy cow, ram or whatever. “I also accentuate the features and highlights of the face and nose area of the animals according to how far the sign will be viewed from the roadway,’’she explains. If ever you’re driving through Oklahoma and see a little better than lifesize Southdown ram ad vertsing a farm, it’s one of her .creations. “That-particular sign had to be viewed from a distance of 40 feet so I highlighted the ram’s features accordingly,” she said. She has also done the Red Rose 4- H Club sign, magnetic signs for the sides of livestock trucks and, of course, does quite a bit of truck lettering in her Quarryville sign shop. Son, Gerald, who with his sister, Barbara, swept the open and junior Southdown breeding divisions, also is becoming in volved in the artistic end of the business. Gerald plans to become a commercial artist and designed the Southdown Association logo for decals. As a farm sign painter, Mrs. Rohrer helps to portray the image of numerous area farms that most people initially see and remember as they travel the rural roads of . southeastern Pennsylvania.—DA Nedra Yoder is joined by the top female in winning nod scored both Grand and Senior the Shoemakersville family's show line-up Champion Milking Shorthorn honors.
