Spitler also was awarded the championships in both 4-H fitting and showmanship by Judge Dana Holder, Fairfield. Brown of Newmanstown earned the championship trophies for fitting and showmanship, respectively. Their entries were also the champions in breed. SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The Brown Swiss Cattle Breeders’ Association held their 101st National Annual Meeting July 15- 18 at the Sacramento Inn, Sacramento, California. Brown Swiss breeders and friends came from 24 states across the country and Mexico. The 230 guests began their convention activities with a reception hosted by the California Association on Wednesday evening. The National Swiss Miss contest was also held Wednesday evening and had seven contestants. Chosen as the 1981 Swiss Miss was Rebecca Long of Thurmont, Maryland. Thursday morning offered a variety of choices for those in attendance. Three seminars throughout the morning covered Component Pricing, Herd Health, focusing on mastitis and calfhood diseases, and Reproduction Management. During the National Annual Meeting, Roger Neitzel, Superintendent of Records presented the National Production Awards. The awards all go to the cow with the highest 305 day ME record made during the year. Each year Ira Inman Awards are presented to the high PTPR herd in three herd size divisions. The National Association’s PTPR Program is a performance program combining Production and Type. This past year 14,634 cows in 364 herds were entered in the program. Group I Winner (5-39 cows) was Ken Eitmg of Minster, Ohio. Group II (40-99 cows) herds were topped by West Lawn Farm, Sarona, Wis. In the Group IU Division (100 cows and over), winner for the fourth year in a row was Vincent Brad dock, Dunmitt, Texas. Brian Garrison, West Salem, Ohio, the National Youth Achievement Winner, and Viking Valley TJ Senatora 602299, the Youth Production Winner owned by Duron Bratland Spring Grove, Minnesota were also honored. Tammy and partner, ‘Lil Miss’, not only took the grand cham pionship of the show, but also claimed the championship honors in both 4-H fitting and showmanship competition. Showing the reserve grand champion was Randy Blouch of Bethel. Randy’s champion was the first place Alpine milking doe, ‘April.’ This was Randy’s first reserve championship at the Lebanon Fair. He is the 15-year-old son of Lee and Barbara Blouch. Along with his prize-winning 3-year-old doe, Randy owns two more Alpine kids April’s twins. In the 4-H showmanship and fitting contest. Judge Dana Holder of Fairfield,' Adams County, awarded the reserve champion’s trophy to senior 4-H’er Brian Blouch, the 16-year-older brother of Randy. Brian’s entry was the champion Saaned, ‘Snowqueen.’ The reserve champion 4-H fitting trophy was awarded to a junior exhibitor, Dawn Spitler, the 13- year-old sister of Tammy. Her washing and clipping efforts, executed on 5-month-old Foxy Lady, a LaMancha kid, helped her follow in her big sister’s footsteps. In the FFA showmanship and fitting competition, Roberta Demler of Klemfeltersville was awarded the champion fitter’s trophy. Roberta is the 15-year-old daughter of Lewis and Mary Demler and a sophomore at Elco. She showed her champion Nubian kid, ‘Titama Emily.’ The FFA champion showman trophy went to Irene Brown, the 18- year-old daughter of Helen and Clyde Brown, R 1 Newmanstown. Irene exhibited the champion Recorded Grade. Opperman has ac cepted the position of Secretary- Treasurer of the National Brown Swiss Cattle Breeders’ Association headquartered at Beloit, Wisconsin. The announcement was made by William J. Notter, Jr., Holyoke, Colorado, President of the Association. George, a 58 year old Manning, lowa dairyman, has long been involved in Brown Swiss and dairy activities. He is a former national director and president ot the Brown Swiss Association. In 1968 George was the third man to receive the prestigious Keeling Leadership award presented annually to an lowa dairyman for outstanding leadership m the state and nation. He served as a director and second vice president of Midwest Breeders Coop; director and member of the executive committee of Midland UDIA and president of the lowa State Dairy Association and lowa PDCA. George and his wife have a family of 6 children. They plan to relocate in Beloit and George will assume his responsibilities as Secretary-Treasurer in mid- August.
