C4—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, May 9,1981 Betty Irwin (Continued from Page C 2) shows that students are distributed evenly throughout the county, with many rural areas heavily represented. Betty says, “1 am very proud of the fanning com munity and the support they have given to the Center.” That support includes a donation by the County Farm Women Societies when they chose the S. June Smith Center as them county project in 1977. Farm Women 31 cooperated with the March of Dimes and the Pequea Valley Jaycees in contributing a special chair to the Center and in 19714-H sponsored a Walk-a-Thon during which 38 4-H’ers walked 10 miles to raise money. At Home Betty now feels totally at home in Lancaster County, saying, “I consider this my home. I admire the people who are in the County who do so much. They volunteer to do for others, not for themselves. The thing that amazed me when we moved here is that people con sidered it a duty to do good for their neighbors. I hadn’t looked at it that way before. I knew neigh borlmess, but not in the same way as here.” Family is very important to Betty, and she says forthrightly, “I feel very strongly about a parent being in the home, especially m the very early years.” She says she is proud of Jay’s appointment as County Extension Director to succeed Max Smith, adding, “I am very proud of him. I’m being prejudiced, but I think he’ll do a mce job, and his background in management will be helpful to him. “I enjoy being Jay’s wife and meeting a lot of people, although I Pole Shed& Pont Material Center PRESSURE TREATED LUMBER • 2x4 • 4x4 Excellent For: SIZES: • 2x6 • 4x6 ★ FARM BUILDING ★ PATIO • 2xB *6x6 ★ FENCE * POLE SHEDS • 2xlo • 2x6 T4G ★ SUNDECK ★ OTHERS TREATED Large Selection of LANDSCAPE TIMBERS LAWRENCE HARDWARE SVz"xs” e4* • Door Hangers • Bumpers x g’ WW • Brackets • Stay Rollers * ~ ea - • Track • Latches EASY-COVER" byOnduMm* ■ IxB Barn Siding 6’ to 16’ FARM ■ 2xB T&G Yellow ROOFING Pine Barn Flooring SALEI - LARGE SELECTION OF All DIMENSION LUMBER ij' Ix 6 Rough Cypress Boards I For Fence & Gates LJi For Low Prices on Roof Trusses 6*7" x 46" Sheet Check with Musselman •25 Year warranty against ——————————— ■ eaks , . f . We are both in dividuals. We are supportive of each other and our decisions, but I don’t see myself as an extension of Jay. In addition to working five days a week, Betty is active, along with Jay, in Bethany Presbyterian Church. Barbara Sullivan added that because of Betty’s being a member, she often acts as a liaison between the church and the Center. Mrs. Sullivan pointed out that the church charges nothing for use of the rooms or for heati ig and lighting the rooms us ed in the program. She figures that’s a donation m excess of |14,000 annually. Betty really does love children, and works in the nursery during Sunday church school. She is also a member of the Women’s Association. She is a member of the Lan caster Association for Retarded Citizens and is a member of the board for the Lancaster chapter of the Epilepsy Foundation of America. When she wants to relax, she enjoys embroidery, but says she doesn’t like to write letters which would seem like a natural pastime with daughters living as far away as California and Spam. Instead she says they make tapes to mail, adding “Our telephone bills are terrible.” Because of her Spanish son-in law and her daughter living in Spain, Betty says, “I’m broadening my horizons by Lancaster Co . Society 5 Society 5 and their husbands met April 27 at 6 p.m. at the Leola Family Restaurant for a family style meal. During a short business meeting it was decided that a contribution will be made to this year’s county dairy queen project. After the dinner meeting, Mrs. Mary Emnch hosted the group on a talk tour of the Sperry Cor poration of New Holland. reading a magazine called ‘World Press Review’ It gives you a totally different prospective of the United States by stating views from abroad.” For Betty each day offers a new challenge as she works with her special children.
