Bowers, has received the top award which is presented annually by the Northeast Section of The Wildlife Society for his outstanidng professional ac complishments in the field of wildlife con servation. Bowers, who has been executive director of the Game Commission since 1965, was selected as recipient of the John Pearce Memorial Award from among wildlife professionals in 17 northeastern states and 5 Canadian provinces. He is only the second Pennsylvanian to be so honored. The award was presented to Bowers at the 33th Northeastern Fish and Wildlife Conference held recently at Virginia Beach, Virginia. (211) 834-2100 Lancaster Farming, Saturday, May 9,1981—019 receives honors John Pearce Memorial Award winners are honored for their contribution to knowledge and leadership over a period of years in areas of wildlife work including research, management, administration and education as evidenced by publications, skillfull development and ap plication of effective management and educational programs and methods. Bowers, a native of York, received a B.S. degree m zoology and entomology; from the Pennsylvania State University in 1946. He also earned an M.S. degree in wildlife management at Penn State m 1946. His undergraduate work was interrupted during World War 11, when he served with the Marine Corps from 1942 through 1945. He was a fighter pilot and at tained the rank ot captain with the renewed Blacksheep Squadron of “Pappy” Boyington during combat operations in the South Pacific. Bowers has been a Game Commission employee since 1948. He served for two years before becoming deputy executive director of the agency in 1959. Bowers is an avid hunter of both big and small game. He has worked with many beagle and sportsmen’s clubs throughout Pennsylvania and in neighboring states to encourage food and cover management to produce better crops of game. He is a member of the Izaak Walton League of America and various other sport smen’s groups, and The Wildlife Society. Just two years ago he served as president of the International Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies. The International Association is a voluntary organization whose government members include the wildlife agencies of all 50 states, the four agencies of dhe U.S. government involved with fish and wildlife, and the wildlife agenices of the Dominion of Canada, six Canadian provinces, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico and the Republic of Mexico. The International Association promotes rational management of fish and wildlife and coordinates efforts of public ajencies responsib'e for protection and management cf the fish and wildlife of North America. Bowers has been a member of the In ternational Association since 1959. He was elected to the Executive Committee of the group in 1971, served later as chairman of both the Resolutions and Executive Committees and was second and first vice president of the International before moving on to the top office in the organization. The Game Com mission’s executive director has been active in numerous regional and national wildlife organizations, especial ly the Atlantic Water fowl Council and the Northeast Fish and Wildlife Directors Association. Last year the U.S. Forest Service presented Bowers with a special national award “in appreciation for his significant contribution to forestry and con servation and his high commitment to professional ideals and his courageous professional leader shin.” ?
