A single-glazed window will conduct up to 20 times more heat from your house than a well insulated wall of the same size Even a double-glazed window conducts ten times more heat than an insulated wall While switching trom double to triple glazing will cut heat loss through windows by one-third, it will also result in a ten percent reduction in the amount of entering light Still, triple glazing is superior except on south windows, where winter solar gain is im portant A 1980 book from Rodale Press (Emmaus, Pa j, Movable In sulation, by William K Langdon, maintains that much can be done to reduce these heat losses by modifying existing window draperies or by constructing one or more of the imaginative systems described in the book The book explains the steps to take after attempting to stop infiltration with caulking, weatherstripping and storm windows Movable insulation is taken down during winter days to allow in the sun s light and warmth, and replaced during winter nights to prevent heat from escaping the home breadsticks and ham balls,” Ketterer suggested For the recipes Ketterer used m her presentation, read the Home on the Range section m the March 14 issue of Lancaster Fanning. year, controversy had been presented by Porkette members who wanted to attend the producer’s program, which ran %T, I I Lancaster Farming, Saturday, February 28,1981—C23 Unusual window coverings out fuel costs Porkettes (Continued from Page C 22) Most of the decorative curtains and draperies on the market are not designed to prevent heat from escaping. To have value as an insulator, a curtain must seal at the bottom and sides so air cannot circulate around it. If warm house air circulates behind a wmdow covering, heat will be lost through the window, either through the glass, or if the window is not perfectly tight, around the edges. Some existing curtains can be modified into more effective thermal shields Heavy draw draperies can be weighted with a chain, sealed with magnetic strips or clamped with a spring strip across the bottom A valance can be added to seal the top Another scheme described in the Movable Insulation book is to put in shutters, which are rigid, Lightweight panels that can be pressed into window openings at night and removed during the day They may be attached by magnetic clips, or they may fit so snugly that they are held in place by friction. These shutters are often con structed of foam sheathing materials Take care to choose fire-resistant materials such as isocyanurate sheathing, or to encase the foam with gypsum board. Thermal shades can also provide effective window insulation These are quilted shades which run up and down on a track They are available commercially or can be constructed at home simultaneously, as opposed to attending the women’s segment of the Congress But Mabel Strock explained, “We left a large portion of the program open so ladies could attend both But even so, most of the ladies seem to be attending this end of the program We’re really pleased with the turnout and the interest shown ” “We’re all interested in promotion of pork,” Schick added We have a Pork King who bar becues and we speak to many schools It’s all volunteer time, but it’s worth it ”
