My favorite comparison is to look at the profitability of a 40 cow herd producing 18.000 pounds or above, and match it against a 90 cow herd producing 14,000 or 15.000 pounds. Considering the extra investment in cows and equipment for the larger herd, to say nothing of extra tune and labor, the margin of profit for the larger herd is very small. It’s the management for efficient high production that makes the difference not the size. Now, lest we wander too far from the point of this discussion, lets look at another type of sticky by which progress can be measured. It has nothing to do with bigness or economic success. It has to do with ABSOLUTE PUBLIC AUCTION 93 ACRE FARM WITH ALL IMPROVEMENTS. 92 ACRES TILLABLE W. HEMP. TWP. LANC. CO. FARM BOUNDED BY NOLT RD., STONEY BATTERY RD, & MONTEZUMA DR. Everett Kreider Steve Petersheim Lunch furnished sylvama at sunset Saturday, November 22. peace of mind and stability of spirit Progress and success should not be measured only by the yardstick or dollars invested and a hefty line of credit at the bank. Consider the value of a good night’s sleep, freedom from ulcers, and shifting part of the burden of feeding the world on to a few more shoulders. The fallacy of bigness mentioned earlier lies in the tremendous irony that only three percent of our population bears the burden of feeding the other ninety seven percent, plus a large number of hungry mouths overseas. Perhaps we should take a serious look at the trends toward bigness, and decide whether we can afford to load the burden on an ever smaller number of fanners who get bigger and more and more tired and frustrated.
