Thornburgh proclaims October Livestock Month HARRISBURG - Penn sylvania Governor Dick Thornburgh has proclaimed October as Pennsylvania Livestock Month, to help all Pennsylvanians become better acquainted with the livestock industry. In his proclamation, Thornburgh said “Penn sylvania’s Livestock In dustry is a business that is always growing better. Each year, Pennsylvania farmers produce quality cattle, hogs and sheep valued at more than $1.4 billion dollars. The livestock produced in this state provide nutritious protein as well as essential vitamins and minerals. We are fortunate here in Pennsylvania to have such a large variety of delicious meats available to us. This variety and abundance has helped increase Penn sylvania’s standard of living. By-products of livestock are also essential for our daily living-from leather shoes, lanolin in medication, wool clothing, to the life saving procine valve for heart patients. Pennsylvania’s livestock industry is always striving to produce genetically superior animals which will better serve consumers’ needs. Through livestock shows, and performance testing programs initiated by the industry, livestock is con stantly compared and evaluated to meet these needs, not only for today, but for tomorrow as well.” 1a jvernor . jrgh has proclaimed October as Penn sylvania Livestock Month.
