10— Lancaster Fanning, Saturday, July 5,1980 C: Ida’s Notebook Ida Risser We all have our own idiosyncrasies or peculiar ways. I’ve been thinking of the methods that people use to repair things. Of course, you’ve all heard of the farmer who could not get along without his bale wire or bale twine to hold things together and make repairs on the farm My “helper” seems to be Heme On The Range (Continued from Page C 9) PUMPKIN CREAM CHEESE PIE 1 cup graham cracker crumbs V* cup butter or margarine, melted 4 3-ounce packages cream cheese % cup sugar 1% tablespoons flour % teaspoon grated lemon peel % teaspoon grated orange peel % teaspoon vanilla extract 2 eggs 2 egg yolks 1 cup canned or cooked pumpkin 1% cups dairy sour cream 2 tablespoons sugar Vz teaspoon vanilla extract In a medium bowl, mix the graham crumbs and the margarine with a fork With the back of a spoon, press the mixture to the bottom and sides, not the rim of a 9-mch pie plate. Refrigerate. Preheat the oven to 350° F Make the pumpkin cheese filling. In a large bowl, combine cheese, sugar, flour, peels, vanilla, eggs, egg yolks and pumpkin. Beat at medium speed until smooth Turn the mixture into the crust and bake 3540 minutes or until the center of the pie seems firm when pie is shaken gently. Meanwhile, make sour cream topping. In a small bowl, combine the sour cream with the sugar and vanilla Mix well Spread topping evenly over the pie. Bake 10 minutes longer. Let the pie cool completely on a wire rack about 1 hour. Refrigerate overnight. Makes 8 servings. Slick Problem Areas? That probably sounds awful but it was just the thing to repair the holes that were shot in our mailbox, as who wants a soggy newspaper. And then there was the small comer broken out of a wmdowpane during a ram storm. Again my chewing gum became not a temporary repair but a permanent one. And, I reaily did a job with gam when I purchased an old three-legged pot for our fireplace and discovered a hole in the bottom A piece of gum flattened, smoothed, hardened, and painted with black did a wonderful job but I hope no one tries to cook in it Allen’s mother was often teased about her constant use of adhesive tape Of course it was perfect for marking jelly jars, antique dishes and keepsakes. But it also helped to hold things together that were ready to fall apart. My own mother is great at the art of using rubber bands and string They will hold newspaper clippings, pic tures, patches, boxes and so many other things together. Rubber bands do have the disadvantage of either hardening or melting over a period of years but string comes m a wide variety of colors and strengths and it is interesting to see all the different kinds So whatever your favorite mending material is-use it and maybe you’ll discover some really new usage '-W 0 Cohdak Thursday, July 10 Lancaster Co.
