A24—Lancaster Famine, Saturday, Juna 14,1980 Official Dairy- Month proclamation IN THE NAME AND BY AUTHORITY OF THE COMMONWEALTH OF PENNSYLVANIA Pennsylvania’s great wealth comes from its people land and industry Agriculture is the keystone of Pennsylvania's economic stability, and the keystone of our nation's heritage The dairy industry is a billion dollar industry in Pennsylvania As an agricultural state Pennsylvania ranks among the top five states in the nation in the number of dairy farms, cows on farms, amount of milk produced marketed and sold to processing plants, in the top five states for production of milk milkfat, evaporated and sweetened and condensed milk, and ice cream Milk's importance to the human diet has been recognized since prehistoric times Milk is nature's roost "nearly perfect food" and provides many essential nutrients for good health at a oinuroum cost to the consumer Two eight-ounce glasses of milk provide 2/3 of the calcium and 1/3 the protein an adult needs daily Milk is also a primary source of riboflavin and contributes phosphorus, magnesium niacin thiamin and vitamins A B 6 and 8 12 for a balanced diet Pennsylvania's dairy industry and the family farmers who have made the industry grow are a source of pride for us all It is fitting that we set aside a time to seek a renewed awareness of the importance of milk to our diets and to our economy Therefore I Dick Thornburgh Governor of the Common wealth of Pennsylvania do hereby declare June 1980 as "DAIRY MONTH" in the Commonwealth I urge everyone to observe the month with appropriate activities in recognition of the fact that Pennsylvania's moustry is truly "Growing Better " This is the Dairy Month proclamation signed at the bottom by Governor Dick Thornburgh and issued in the name and by authority of the Com monwealth. Special programs and demonstrations will be featured throughout the week giving the public the opportunity to observe and learn more about the agricultural industry of Berks County. Scheduled events included a Grand Opening Ceremony, June I6th at 6 p.m. with Heading City Mayor Karen York 4-H Beef Club meets YORK - A fitting and showmanship demonstration was the program for the June 2 York County 4-H Beef meeting. Leader, John Hausner gave helpful tips on fitting beef cattle. Chris Sunday, Bienda Walter, Chris Shive, and Bill Wise demonstrated the right and wrong ways of showing cattle. There was a short business meeting when some dates to remember were discussed. June 14 is Jr. Livestock Field Day at Penn State. Participants will judge beef, sheep, swine, and meats. Following this will be a showmanship contest. On June 21 there will be a chicken barbeque at the 4-H Center. The Lehigh County Judging Contest will be held on July 1. THE SIMPLE VALUE JOB.
