IC-UMUhr Fanwiag, Miy 3, HW Top Brown Swiss to be sold LiTITZ Over 50 head of registered Brown Swiss cattle from more than ten states have been consigned to sell in the 1900 Kentucky National Show and Sale to be held in Louisville, Kentucky. To take place Saturday, May 17, at the New Market Hall, Kentucky Fair and Expositions Center, the sale is scheduled to begin at 1 p jn. It will be preceded by a show of the sale cattle at 9:30 a.m., Saturday morning. The 18th Annual Show and Sale series is cooperatively sponsored by the Kentucky Department of Agriculture and the Kentucky Brown Swiss Association. It is managed by Brown Swiss Enterprises, Inc., the marketing arm of the National Brown Swiss Cattle Breeders’ Association. The Kentucky Department of Agriculture established a livestock show and sale series in the early sixties. The Kentucky National Brown Swiss Show and Sale is one of five such purebred dairy cattle shows sponsored annually by the various breed associations and the Kentucky Department of Agriculture. They are designed to promote the nation’s dairy cattle business through recognition of the Industry’s finest animals. The Brown Swiss Show and Sale is the oldest of the five, the first being held in 1962. All of the Brown Swiss cattle selling on May 17 have met above national breed average standards for both production and type. Selling in this outstanding group will be cows, bred heifers, open yearling heifers and junior and senior calves. The young calves were chosen with 4-H and FFA project work in mind. This auction will include two very promising young bulls with depth of pedigree, backed by Proven Plus Superior sires and out standing records of production and classification. Brown Swiss, probably the oldest of all the present-day breeds of dairy cattle, were first introduced into the United States over 100 years ago. Each team consists of one shearer, three spinners and one weaver. Sheep will be shorn and the wool given to the teams to fashion a shawl while the crowd watches. This will be followed at 3 pm. by a fashion show and auction of the shawls. This year a new dimension has been added in the form of a fleece competition. Fleeces entered will be judged and a champion white and champion natural colored will be selected, with an over-all grand champion. A highlight of Sunday’s activities, will be selection and crowning of Maryland’s Lamb and Wool Queen, at 12 noon. Wright, reports that the 100th National Annual Meeting of the Brown Swiss Association will take place in Springfield, Massachusetts on July 10 with a number of other breed related ac tivities. Another Centennial Year activity will be an International Brown Swiss Conference, October 1 to 4, at the World Dairy Expo in Madison, Wisconsin. Nearly 1000 foreign visitors including breeders and staff members are expected to participate. Festival pearing at various fairs and functions. A popular event is the sheep dog demonstration. The dogs, Border Collies under the guidance of a trainer, demonstrate their ability to herd sheep on command.
