142—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, November 17,1979 Twin Valley FFA’ers attend wildlife contest ELVERSON - Five members of the Twin Valley FFA participated in the Wildlife Contest at Middle Creek recently. Participating in this contest were students from Berks, Lebanon, Schuylkill and Lancaster Counties. Regional standings were based on the four counties: area standings were based on Berks, Lebanon, and Schuylkill. The contest consisted of identification of 10 species in the groups of birds, mam mals, fish, reptiles, and amphibians. The contestans also had to identify animal tracks, bird calls, wildlife foods, and other wildlife signs, plus a wildlife test (written) which had questions on nesting, feeding, habitat, game laws, etc. A wildlife habitat evaluation excerise was also included. The Twin Valley Team placed first in area and first in the region. The team consisted of Marty Miller, son of Mr. and Mrs. Martin Miller, Honey Brook; Ron Lilley, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Lilley, Glenmoore; National horse contests held in Pa. MECHANICSBURG - The National 4-H and Keystone International Collegiate horse judging contest and the National 4-H Horse Bowl were held for the second year in Penn sylvania. The scene for these events was the Crossgates Inn, near Mechamcsburg. In the 4-H Horse Bowl, the team from Massachuesetts placed first, with New York coming m second. High individual was Myra Collins of North Carolina. Yvonne Strecher of New Jersey had the second high score. In the 4-H horse judging competition, the team from Virginia, coached by Ann Huff, had their second consecutive win. Their score was 1727 points. Coming in second place was the 4-H team from Michigan. The high scoring in dividual in the 4-H contest was Lydia Barrett of Virginia, followed by Karen Deskis of Connecticut. Other area placmgs were Todd Probst from Northern Lebanon fifth, Mike Gingrich from Northern Lebanon sixth, Ron Bold from Northern Lebanon seventh, Rick Wolfe from Cedar Crest eighth, Mike Becker from Conrad Weiser ninth, Brian Highly from Conrad Weiser tenth. team members from Rat cliffe Hicks School of Agriculture edged Tech, 231&-2312. High individuals in the collegiate contest were Charlie Hemphill, Texas Tech, 609 points; and Carolyn Bentley, University of Connecticut, 604. The Pennsylvania 4-H team placed 10th out of 24, and the Penn State judging team placed 10th out of 15.
