Kathleen Jayes, 17, and Karen Osmun, 17, both of Glen Gardner, Alan Lefebvre, 17, of Cherryville, and Susan Puchnicki, 15, of Raritan Lancaster Farming, Saturday, November 17,1978 Township, represented New Jersey 4-H’ers and placed sixth out of forty eight teams m the National Horticultural Identification and Judging Contest held in St. Louis on October 27. The contest tested their ability to identify fruits, vegetables, ornamentals, and flowers, their ability to judge relative quality of these thmgs, and their knowledge of Horticultural practices. Although some of them stayed up most of the night before the contest cram ming, their real preparation began many years ago. Karen Osmun, Alan Lefebvre, and Kathleen Hayes all have been members of the Spruce Hun Gardening Club for six years. Susan Puchnicki has been involved with the gardening project through the Lucky 4-H Club for three years. Last summer they qualified to represent New Jersey by competing in a State-Wide Horticultural Judging and Identification Contest in Atlantic County. Since then, the group met at least once a week to prepare for the contest. They visited Glen Summit Nur sery in Pittstown, where the owner, David Buchholtz taught them to identify many ornamental shrubs. They also visited flower gardens at North Hunterdon High School and Hilder brandt Nursery in Oldwick. At one practice session, the County 4-H Agent, Ray Nichols, helped them sharpen their judging skills. During their visit to the home of Ralston Purina Company, they learned about how plants provide food for animals and how egg yolks can vary in color from yellow to green and red. At the internationally famous Missouri Botanical Gardens, they marvelled at many displays, including a beautiful Japanese Garden. Susan Puchnicki, summed up the trip by saying, “It was great!
