T f \ ’ > s E,PA SEPT 10 SEPT 12 \ ‘ t \ \ \S K. Lancaster Farming, Saturday, September 8,1979 ByKENDACEBORRY QUAKERTOWN - Today, September 8, is farm visitation day for Bucks County. From 10 to 4 p.m., eight farms located throughout the county will be open to the public, where interested visitors can see first hand just how the farmers make their living. One of those eight farms open for visitation is the farm of Phillip Rosenberger, Quarkertown R 2. He is in partnership with his dad, William, who is semi retired. Primarily a dairy farm, 180 acres are worked, with 120 of those owned by the family. Showing that variety adds a little spice to the farm, Rosenberger, besides milking 45 cows, keeps 350 layer hens. His wife Linda has her own horse business, m which she boards, trams, and gives riding lessons. Primary crops grown on the farm include com, oats, and wheat. Phillip Rosenberger is the third generation in his family to farm at that spot. The middle child of seven, he stated that he has always enjoyed farming, liking the work. “That’s the only reason to be in farming,” he noted. “You can’t really be in for the money. I love the out doors, am naturally active, and I guess farming was just meant for me.” He and his wife are members of the Bucks County Farmers Association, which sponsor the annual event They expect 2,000 to 3,000 people to roam over the selected farms today, and the Rosenbergers were told to be Invitation ANNUAL HYBRID CORN FIELD DAYS Pine Creek Seed Farms T. The Rosenbergers feed their dairy cows haylage, using a concrete silo system for storage. This is their first year for such an operation, and so far, Rosenberger said, it is working “real well”. The milk that the cows produce goes to Lehigh Valley Dairies. Rosenberger told that he has a forage analysis done on his fields, and his feed is based on that. Now all he buys is sup plement for his feed, oc casionally purchasing com. Linda Rosenberger told that her horse bam had opened in March, and that she is still taking boarders. Right now her pride and joy is a three year old % Thoroughbred filly, Homespun Kate, which she has just begun to show. As far as the eggs are concerned, most of them are retailly sold to a local livestock market. If the farm isn’t too crowded today, Rosenberger hopes to give a demon stration of chopping com, blowing it up into the silo; and feeding haylage to the cows. Expecting quite a crowd from the Allentown and Philadelphia area, Rosen berger added that he hopes there will be some farmers m the group too. “I always enjoy talking to farmers,” he remarked. “It’s fun learning how each person does things.” The other seven places open today, and a descrip tion of each follow: Quakertown Veterinary Clime, where three prac ticing veterinarians treat (Turn to Page 35) HAT SUITS YOU BEST 33
