The Environmental Protection Agency has granted a specific exemption under the provisions of section 18 of the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act, as amended, to the Penn sylvania Dept. of Agriculture for the use of Pemethrin and Fenvalerate to control Colorado potato beetles on potatoes in the state. Hock isn’t quite sure why this is so, but stated that the problem is definitely there. These new materials which have been approved for use, with the restrictions issued by the EPA, Hock, explained, are hoped to knock down the pest. “These products won’t last long, they don’t have a long residual.” he explained. These pesticides may be applied at the rate of 0.1 to 0.2 pound active ingredients per acre. A maximum of six ap plications of permethrin or fenvalerate may be applied. No fields may be treated with both fenvalerate and permethrin. A pre-harvest interval of seven days is required. A maximum of 15,000 acres in the state may be treated. And the applications will be made with air or ground equipment. The spray mixture volumes of 40 to 100 gallons of water will be applied by ground equipment, five to 10 gallons by aircraft. Aerial applications will not be made when the wind speed exceeds five miles per hour. A buffer zone of 200 feet (horizontal) between treated area and quatic areas will be observed. Aerial applications should be staggered in time in areas where fish and shellfish are important resources. These pesticides are highly toxic to bees exposed to direct treatment or to residues on crops or weeds.
