The Harford County, Maryland dairy farmer doesn’t just look for savings when he’s shopping or building. He plans for un proved profit margams by checking out tax structures and operating costs. The unique design of Keith and Randy Comer are entrusted with many of the responsibilities at the Comers’ dairy farm. Both are interested in a dairying career. Comer’s new 60-cow dairy operation offers proof of Comer’s emphasis on cost reductions Knowing that he could only be taxed for “what’s under roof,” Comer built 85 free stalls in four “mini-barns” rather than one big more conventional structure. He’s delighted not only with the money he’s saving, but also the way the system is func tioning. Comer says he has no problems with his new set-up and efficiency has been significantly improved The Maryland dairyman has six rows of free stalls There’s a solid wall at the head end of each row, and the sides are closed off. The rear area of each row is totally open and only the stalls themselves are under roof. The alleys and walk ways are exposed to sun and ram.
