However, the liquid in the can is not an attempt to deceive consumers. A packing medium, usually liquid, helps assure a safe product. In sterilizing canned food, if there is too much solid food in the container, the inner contents could be under processed. Recently, commercial food processors have started to label canned fruits and vegetables for solid content, as well as net weight which mcludes both liquid and solid. Solid content is the weight of the fruits or vegetables placed in the container before the necessary liquid for processing is added and before the product is processed. Because the solid weight labeling is a voluntary program, many processors may make the change when new label printing is done. You can expect a gradual changeover to solid content labeling.
