Steve, the son of Mr. and Mrs. James Shaw, Oley, was this year’s owner of the grand champion 4-H Holstein at the Pennsylvania Junior Dairy Show. He has been in the dairy business since the day he was bom.” A member of the Eastern Berks Dairy Club, where he is currently the game leader, Steve exclaims that “4-H is really great; you learn valuable information about showing cattle and all other aspects of dairying.” That’s important to young Shaw, who says he’d someday like to farm on his own or go into a partnership with his father. There are 150 acres, 105 of which are tillable, on the home farm. Steve and his 17-year old sister, Wendy, have already begun a small herd of their own, the home-bred animals of which come under the W-S Linden Loch prefix. Wendy, like her brother, is very much interested in dairy cattle. She has four state Junior Holstein Show titles to her credit, the most recent one coming just last week when she won the Penn sylvania FFA Holstein division. It was the second year in a row that she ac complished that feat. In the two previous years she won the Pennsylvania 4-H Holstein division cham pionships. Since then, he has shown her eight times, almost always win ning grand champion honors. Richard Keene of Gilbertsville, N.Y., who judged the Holstein contest last week, described the white bovine as “a tremendous dairy cow.” She is estimated to produce 19,400 pounds of milk and 821 pounds of butterfat this year as a 6-year old. But 4-H is a lot more than showing and fitting cows.
