Omaha Cattle Thursday, June 15,1978 Compared with the previous week’s close through midweek, prices on slaughter steers were 1.75- 2.25 lower and heifers were .75-1.50 lower. Late supplies were not sufficient to reflect the full bearishness of the situation; a few closing sales both classes 3.00-3.50 off. Cows closed .50-1.00 higher and bulls steady. Four day receipts 15,500 as compared 14,700 previous week and 19,300 a year ago. Fed cattle prices showed some mild strength on the initial session but prices turned sharply downard on later sessions in reflection of a dull carcass trade despite the reduced rate of slaughter. Several slaughterers curtailed hours because of the poor movement of the finished product, and all buying interests took a firm stand to bring live costs in line and carcass realizations. The situation was further aggravated by another poor distribution of supplies over the trading period. Much of the supply was purchased for slaughter for points outside the immediate Omaha area. The overall finish of the steer supply was fairly attractive with a rather liberal percentage of choice and several loads choice and prime; much of the heifer supply was good to average-choice.
