The Cloister Chapter from Ephrata was clearly out in front again this year when the number of gold medals were counted. They picked up 11 gold medals, nearly twice as many as their closest rival, the Solanco Chapter from southern, Lancaster County. Both schools are perennial powerhouses in FFA com petition. A >ear ago both schools won nine gold medals. Solanco, with seven gold medals, was followed by Penn Manor and Red Lion, each with five golds. The Oxford Chapter in Chester County had four golds. Some impressive victories were scored by individuals and chapters from southeastern Pennsylvania. One young man who brought distinguished honors to Solanco was Sam Long. He placed first out of 149 students in the livestock judging contest. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Long, Peach Bottom. He won his gold in the farm management contest. Ephrata’s dairy foods judging team made a clean sweep in that contest. Placing 1,2,3, respectively, were Fred Burkett, Galen Hurst, and Marvin Fox. More gold came to the Cloister Chapter when Tim Gockley steered his way to a second place in the Safe Tractor Operation Contest. The run for gold continued. Curtis Snavely and Randy Bucher earned one in the Agricultural Mechanics Contest, John Zimmerman placed first in dairy showmanship, Ronald Good won the Small Gasoline Engine Contest, and Larry Burkholder saw the gold in the dairy cattle Judging event. Red Lion excelled in poultry and agronomy contests, picking up three of its five gold medals in those events. The others were earned in dairy and livestock judging events. Wayne placed second out of 149 in the latter contest, while James Harnish followed in eighth place. Garden Spot High School got its three gold medals on the strength of efforts by Maxine Messner in public speaking, and Sandy Weaver and Barbara Herr in land judging. The Oxford Chapter earned gold twice in the dairy cattle judging contest, thanks to Barry Hostetter who placed seventh out of 215 and Ed Breckbill, 11th. The team was third in the state. The third member was Alan Mason. More gold came in livestock judging, thanks to David Wylie placing seventh among the 149 competitors. The fourth top medal was won by Renee McCardell in the interview contest. The most popular event, dairy cattle judging, was won by Tim Peachey of Huntingdon County. Kress Simpson of Mansfield was second, followed by Solacco’s Tom Kirk, Ken nard-Dale’s James Knight, and Cedar Crest’s Roy Shirk.
