Dairy co-op notes disparity in Northeast’s milk prices SYRACUSE, N.Y. - It is the belief of members of the board of directors of Eastern Milk Producers Cooperative that the mtent of the Federal Milk Marketing Orders of the Northeast to equalize milk prices to dairy farmers is not functioning today, when a disparity exists in prices received by neigh boring dairymen of between $.70 and $l.OO per hun dredweight. At a special meeting here last week, Eastern’s board of directors felt that these Federal Orders need to be adjusted among all dairymen to stabilize the market Currently, ap proximately 50 per cent of the dairy farmers in Federal Order 2 are paying the cost of balancing the market for all dairy farmers in that Order. An Eastern spokesman stressed that, without cooperatives, the Federal Order system is in jeopardy and thousands of dairy farmers could be forced out of business. The cooperative’s board stressed that relief is needed im mediately to insure the continued stability of the economy of the Northeast. Other milk cooperatives and farm organizations throughout the region are Short All weights 51.50- 52.00. HEIFERS Choice: 400-500 lbs. 46.50- 48 00; 500-600 lbs. 47.0048.00; 600-700 lbs 44.5047.75. Eastern, the largest dairy cooperative in this part of the Country, is marketing all of the milk produced by its members, and is striving to assist, on a limited basis, others who have lost their market. To regulate or deregulate trucking is a subject of current debate. Economic regulation was established to protect the consumer. Such regulation provides an efficient transportation system at a reasonable cost and without discrimination to all communities, some 38,000 of which are totally dependent on truck service. Deregulation would remove such control and achieve the opposite result. Energy conservation remains a prime objective for regulated carriers particularly as the price of diesel fuel continues to climb. Among the methods attempted by the companies to achieve increased fuel efficiency are the use of high torque rise low rmp engines, air shields to reduce aerodynamic drag and radial tires. 17
