A TRIBUTE TO CARWYTHAM FARMS Carwytham Farms, Long Island, New York, is impressive by any standard. The performance of its Holstein herd is a case in point. In 1976 Carwytham Farms was the high herd in DHIA in New York state with 266.4 cows, 18,725 lbs. milk, 3.7% test, and 693 lbs. fat. The herd rated 7th nationally for herds of 150-200 registered animals. Part of the herd - cows producing 70 lbs. or more per day - is housed in a stanchion barn. The remainder is loose housed. The cows are large and receive high levels of corn silage - all they will consume, limited amount of alfalfa hay and generous portions of Gehman’s 16% Pel-Flakes, a coarse textured grain feed of pellets and flaked grains coated with molasses. Feea treatment - pelleting and flaking grains - provide protein that escapes breakdown in the rumen and is available protein to meet the high producing cows need for intact protein for milk production. Individual records are impressive also; #1550 Carwytham ABC Sally Calved at 2 yrs. 11 mo. peaked at 88 ibs./day and produced 20,034 lbs. milk and 671 lbs. fat in 295 days; calved at 3 yrs. 10 mo. and produced 23,519 milk and 886 fat during her second lactation. #1638 Round Out Piebe Tammy Calved 2 yrs. 3mo 15,634 milk, 544 fat in 276 days Calved 3 yrs 4 mo. 27,510 milk, 758 fat in 341 days Calved 4 yrs. 6mo 25,629 milk, 815 fat in 298 days Calved 5 yrs. smo 22,903 milk, 771 fat in 274 days Calving interval is near ideal about 13 months LONG ISLAND, NEW YORK High production is maintained by feeding for high production - especially high levels of grain during peak period of lactation - and by judicious culling.
