i2—Lancaster Farming, Saturda; s: Chimmers took up his guard beside the pumpkin to see if the yellow-eyed pumpkin eater would come. Chimmers and the pumpkin eater By KENDACE BORR Y “And the yellow-eyed pumpkin eater was never seen again”, said Andy’s father as he finished the story. Andy still sitting in his father’s lap, looked at the pic tures of the fearsome pumpkin-eating monster. “Do you think the pumpkin-eater will come here to eat my pum pkin 9 ’he asked. Chimmers, Andy’s Siamese cat, who was laying on the floor next to Andy, perked up his ears. Was he hearing right 9 Was there really some threat to that pumpkin sitting out on the front porch? But Chimmers knew that Andy loved that pumpkin, so nothing must happen to it. Andy’s father, in reply to the question, said “I don't know, Andy. Who knows where the yellow-eyed pumpkin eater may strike next.” With these words. Chimmers felt a tremor of fear start back at the tip of his tail and twitch forward through his body as he saw in his mind some fearsom yellow-eyed monster come screaming out of the dark and gobbling up Andy’s Halloween pumpkin. The thought worried him so much that he walked to the window and hopped up on the sill where he could see the pumpkin outside softly glowing in the dark. “Well, ” meowed Chimmers, “If I have anything to do with it, nothing will happen to that pumpkin.” Soon it was tune for Andy to go to bed and Chimmers went outside for his last stroll before sleeping at the foot of Andy’s bed. But instead of going back mto the house when he was called, he hid in the bushes, determined to stay out all night and protect the jack-o-lantem. Finally all the house lights went off and Chimmers knew everyone inside was in bed. He crawled from his hiding place and ambled across the yard to take his post beside the brightly lit pumpkin. “I don’t know what you’re smiling about,” Chmuners grumbled to the pumpkin. “It’s cold out here.” Still complaining softly to himself, he curled as closely as he could to the pumpkin and started his watch. At first it seemed completely silent outside and Chunmers began to relax. Then his eyes began to droop and is head felt heavy as he tried to hold it up. His eyes blinked, and blinked again, and then closed... Suddenly Chunmers eyes flew open as he heard a sound ahead of him. OOOOOOOOOHHHHHHCHOOOO! went the noise. It’s just the wind, thought Chunmers. as his tail twitched nervously. But if it was the wind, then why did it sound like it was getting closer’ Then a great flapping noise sounded close by, and Chunmers quickly decided the best way to protect the pumpkin was to hide behind it. There he nervously peered around to the front to see what was happening. The first thing he saw were two big yellow eyes staring down at him. Then he heard the noise again, “Whoooooooooooooo-chooooo! ” “Meow!” yelled Chunmers, which meant “Don’t you dare eat my pumpkin!” From the other side of the pum pkin a startled snort was heard. Slowly Chunmers took a closer look at the “monster” before him. There stood a big owl with a gnn on his face. “Whoo-choo!” he sneezed again. “Sorry,” he added, “all this ram we’ve been having. Some of it must have gotten under my feathers.” “You mean you’re not the pumpkin eater?" asked Chimmers. “Who, me 9 asked the owl “No, no, no, no, no I’m just the hoot owl that lives in the woods. I’m afraid my cold has affected my hoot too. Makes it sound sort of weird. But it adds to Halloween, you know. And he gave another long whooooo-chooooo “Say you’re not waiting for the yellow-eyed pumpkin eater, are you’ 9 ”, the hoot owl asked. “I thought everyone knew he comes around here tomorrow night 1 ” “Tomorrow night'” Chimmers meowed. “Humphrh' I must have missed that part of the story. If that’s the case, I better get some sleep tonight ” And without further thought, Chimmers curled himself up into a ball of fur and fell asleep to dream of yellow-eyed pumpkin eaters For he knew that when the next night would come, he would again be on guard duty to face the terrible beast of the Halloween season Beware, yellow-even pumpkin eater, for ( himmers is October 29,1977 s s Find the Halloween words in the puzzle above.
