By LAUREL SCHAEFFER Berks County Reporter LEESPORT - As the auctioneer’s gavel went down on the final bid of $l.lO per pound, Joe Crisafulli, a 15-year old sophomore at Schuylkill Valley High School, had reasons to be pleased. His 95 pound grand champion market lamb had just been the first lamb sold in Berks County’s First 4-H Market Lamb Sale. Joe also had the reserve champion lamb which went for $.90 per pound and another lamb which sold for $.60 per pound. All of his sheep were Suffolk- Hampshire crosses which he had bred and raised himself. He has been breeding and showing sheep for three years. The sale was held in conjunction with the Annual Baby Beef Sale at the Leesport Market and Auction on October 19th. A total of 14 market lambs were sold by 10 members of and lamb sale the 4-H Sheep and Lamb Club. The sale averaged 64 cents per pound for a total of 1210 pounds of lamb sold. Buyer of the grand champion was Muthard’s Meat Market, Temple. Showing the grand champion steer at the An nual Baby Beef Round-Up was 10-year old Kirk Fisher from Oley. Kirk’s steer, a Charolais-Angus cross bred by Daniel Schlegal, Oley, brought $.90 per pound and was sold to the Leesport Auction.
