—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, July 23, 1977 * 92 Newville pull attracts 70 tractors NEWVILLE, Pa—The Cumblerland Valley Tractor Pullers Association held a large tractorpull Saturday July 16, at the Fairgrounds, here. Seventy tractors from Pennsylvania and Maryland competed in the 10 classes. The 7000 pound open class and 15,000 pound stock turbo class proved to be quite competitive. All three of the top finishers in each class made full pulls - a distance of 250 feet. Wien the smoke and dust cleared, the 7000 pound open winner was Elwoqji Flowers, Manheim, who drove his Farmall M, “Flower Power,” a distance of 146 feet and four inches. Snook Flowers, Manheim, placed second with his Cockshutt, going 141 feet and five inches. Third place was taken by Ted Houch, Gap, aboard his IH 427 Chevy powered machine with a distance of 126 feet and ten inches. Dave Hall, Boonsboro, Md., made his second full pull to win the 15,000 pound Golden Fleecers practice fitting WEST GROVE, Pa.-The Golden Fleece 4-H Club members held a practice fitting session at the farm of Mrs. Warn G. Menhennett near Cochranville on July 11. The purpose of the session was to help new club members get ready for the coming sheep show season. Twenty-two 4-H’ers par ticipated with older club members helping new members. “Fitting” or getting the sheep ready for showing, includes washing the sheep, currying and carding the wool, trimming the wool and blanketing the sheep. Each of the new members brought a sheep on which to work. Second place was taken by Terry Price, Boonsboro, , Md., driving a John Deere 4430 a distance of 132 feet and eight inches. Jacob Hykes, Greencastle, placed third with a distance of 122 feet and three inches aboard his International “Red Runt.” Harry Barrick, Jr. Newville was a double winner, taking both the 5000 pound stock class and 9000 stock-turbo. Driving an Oliver Super 88 he beat out nineteen other drivers with a distance of 86 feet and five inches. Placing , second with a distance of 70 feet and six inches was Greg Ellerman, Newville with his Farmall M. Mike Miller, Carlisle on his Oliver 88 Diesel took third position with a distance of 67 feet and six and one Quarter inch. In the 9000 pound stock turbo class, Barrick drove his Oliver 1855 for a distance of 218 feet and four inches. Clarence Forrester, Orr- stown, finished second with a distance of 208 feet aboard Chester-Delaware 4-H Sheep Roundup, the Regional Sheep Show, Solanco, Allentown, Maryland State, Eastern National, Keystone International, and the Pennsylvania Farm Show. Membership in the club is open to any youngster who owns a sheep or would like to own one and who is between 9 and 18 years of age. Danny Forrester drove his turbo powered Ford a distance of 185 feet nine and one quarter inch to beat out Dave Wagner, Newville aboard his David Brown 1210. Wagner’s distance was 166 feet.
